Sitsirya Sari-Sari: The Best Shop for Pasalubong kay Bunso
The best childhood memories for me and my brothers and
up to the time my father died is the almost daily pasalubong he would bring for
us. However small it is, be it just a candy, he wouldn’t come home without a
bitbit. Thinking about it now, it warms my heart how those thoughts just showed
how much he thinks about us whenever he buys those treats.
I carry this tradition, yes bringing pasalubong sort
of become a tradition for many of us, to my nephews and nieces. I just love the
look of happy faces when I tell them I have something special for them.
One of the best pasalubong there is are those regional
products made by our kababayans like yema, pastillas and the like. But did you
know that there is one brand or store that you can go to buy the best
pasalubong in town? It’s the Sitsirya
Sari-Sari!
As colorful as the
the colors in their brand logo, the Sitsirya
Sari-Sari 's history is something to read about. Sitsirya Sari-Sari is one of the most establish pasalubong shop in the
city. With more than thirty years behind their name, Sitsirya Sari-Sari is a rags-to-riches story with Mr. Eufrace
Ocampo and his wife in the center of this story.
During the bloggers gathering last week, Mr. Ocampo
shared his hardship and experiences behind the success of his chain of
pasalubong outlets in the country, which can now be found in many malls.
Mr. Ocampo told us how broke and unemployed he was during
the period of EDSA revolution. Seeing his family’s predicament, he was at a
lost in finding ways to support his family.
Until a death in the family forced him to make
something to change his family’s fate. Did you know that to start the business
which he highly thought of that time, he borrowed Php 10, 000 from funeral
monies? The monies from his father-in-law
wake become the very fund for his "pasalubong" business. Why this
business you might ask? Because it reminds him of the sweet-tasting food he
always brought home for his daughter who would always ask him what his gift
whenever he comes home.
This Sitsirya Sari-Sari sweet story have
another tale that focused on Mr. Ocampo’s advocacy of helping others with his
business. He is not after making money, he said. He also wanted to help our
fellow countrymen especially on those regions where some of his pasalubong are
featured in his store.
He said that Filipinos have this innate desire to
please. And to do that we give them gifts, it is a common manifestation of our
love for our friends and families.
The bringing of treat or pasalubong for family and
friends has become a tradition. Mr.
Ocampo said, “Childhood memories of the child waiting for their father or
mother carrying that balot or supot
in hand are etched in the minds of all of us". This might also explain the
tag line of Pasalubong kay Bunso. Bunso referring to a loved one, whether
young or old.
