Adventures of a Diva Princess

With the pandemic delivering a stark reminder that sickness can affect anyone anytime, Alagang Walang Pinipili serves as the shining expression of Biogesic’s unconditional care. It is likewise made reliable and safe with promises of Alagang Maaasahan and Alagang ‘di ka Ipapahamak—qualities now represented by Biogesic and Unilab’s renewed partnership with John Lloyd Cruz.

The generational actor makes his way home to the brand that launched his endorsement career, at a time when looking after one’s self and others rings ever important. Today, John Lloyd waves the iconic #Ingat salute once more as the partnership evolves into a deeper, more meaningful, more collaborative relationship: one that aspires to provide Alagang Walang Pinipili to Filipino families.

“Mahirap hindi maramdaman yung alaga at suporta [ng] mga taong nakatrabaho ko at nakilala ko sa Unilab, kasi gusto ka nila makita—kumusta ka ba, ano ba ang lagay mo, and pinapakinggan ka kung ano ang napipisil mong gawin,” shares Biogesic’s long-standing endorser, John Lloyd Cruz.

John Lloyd first collaborated with Unilab in 2007 as the brand ambassador of Biogesic, the trusted branded paracetamol for headache and fever relief that has been caring for Filipinos for over 50 years. According to Alexander Panlilio, Unilab Corporate Vice President, the partnership takes on new meaning at the time of a global health crisis.

“We at Unilab and Biogesic have always believed in the value of caring and providing trusted quality healthcare to every Filipino family. Through the years, Biogesic has been synonymous with the iconic “Ingat” tagline and we endeavor to make this kind of alaga felt in many more Filipino households,” notes Panlilio. “With our Alagang Walang Pinipili campaign, we aim to further strengthen this connection we have built with our beloved consumers.”

John Lloyd talks more about how ‘Ingat’ has also evolved for him personally because of his experience of Unilab and Biogesic’s care and support over the years. He quips, “'Yung word na 'ingat' reminds me of a journey, [of] familiar people. Reminds me of warmth, the feeling of being home. Definitely, 'ingat' has a new meaning.”

The partnership also serves as a manifestation of Alagang Unilab, the company’s commitment to provide genuine care to Filipinos, one quality medicine at a time.

John Lloyd himself has experienced Alagang Unilab firsthand and stresses his trust in the brand, the company, and the values they represent. “Yung mother's love and care talaga doon din naka anchor yung core ng Unilab at Biogesic. Doon lang ako magtitiwala, sa Alagang Unilab. 'Yung Alagang Unilab, 'yun yung alaga na ma-associate ko sa more than the physical na alaga. 'Yun yung alagang magtatawid sa'yo.”

Biogesic is available in leading drugstores nationwide and online on several eCommerce platforms.

The coming year promises to be another exciting one for Tanduay as it expands its business abroad and fortifies its leadership in the Philippines. To embody its successes and potential for 2023, the brand has chosen beauty queen-turned actress Kylie Verzosa as its newest Calendar Girl.

Verzosa represented and won for the Philippines the 2016 Miss International crown. She has endorsed many products and have graced various magazine covers. Most recently, she showed her mettle in acting in the Philippine adaptation of the Korean thriller, The Housemaid. Her portrayal won her an Actress of the Year award from the Distinctive International Arab Festivals Awards (DIAFA) in Dubai.

The beauty queen-actress is also a mental health advocate. She established Mental Health Matters, a nonprofit organization that started out as an online support group.

“Kylie is a multifaceted talent whose appeal comes from her beauty and brains as well as the strength of her advocacies. She is the perfect embodiment of the brand for 2023 as we seek to engage with varied customer profiles in different markets while continuing to serve our customers in the Philippines,” said Marc Ngo, International Business Development Manager and Senior Brand Manager for Tanduay Distillers, Inc.

Like Verzosa, Tanduay has received awards and distinctions from different international award-giving bodies, the most notable of which is the World’s Number 1 Rum recognition from Drinks International magazine for five consecutive years. Likewise, it has been named the Brand of the Year under the rum category of the London-based World Branding Awards for seven consecutive years.

Asked how she felt about being named the Tanduay Calendar Girl for 2023, the Management degree holder from Ateneo de Manila said that she is both honored and overwhelmed.

“It feels surreal to become a Tanduay Calendar Girl, especially if you consider all the strong and beautiful women who came before me like Heart Evangelista, KC Concepcion, and Bea Alonzo. It feels great to be in their company,” she said.

Ngo shared that Verzosa worked with topnotch editorial and commercial photographer BJ Pascual for the project.

“The images came out really well, and we can’t wait to unveil them to the public,” Ngo said.

Verzosa acknowledged that being a Tanduay Calendar Girl comes with the responsibility to represent an iconic Philippine brand.

“Tanduay has  been delighting customers for more than a century now. It has both been in the home arenas of the biggest teams in the National Basketball Association and in small-scale retail stores in areas outside of Metro Manila. You can see that whoever the brand serving, it makes sure that the person is enjoying the Tanduay experience. This is why it continues to be popular and relevant despite the entry of new brands,” she pointed out.

Verzosa likewise lauded Tanduay’s use of local materials in creating award-winning rums.

“It’s great to see a homegrown Filipino brand competing in the world stage,” she said.

BPI Foundation, the social development arm of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), officially launched the 8th iteration of its flagship program, BPI Sinag, which champions the social enterprise (SE) sector in the country.

With this year’s theme: BPI Sinag Evolution, the program aims to elevate its impact and achieve inclusive and sustainable growth by implementing for the first time, a multi-stakeholder approach, highlighting three vital pillars: the social entrepreneurs, the educators, and the intervenors or sub-sectors. BPI Foundation has committed Php3 million worth of cash grants for these pillars this year.

BPI Sinag Evolution is also aligned with the National Social Enterprise Development Roadmap, one of the accomplishments of Sinag Spark last year, translating the roadmap strategies into viable programs.

Introduced in 2015, the BPI Sinag program was initially conceived as a business challenge for social enterprises (SEs). It has now evolved into a growing ecosystem that continues to bring together not just the country’s visionary entrepreneurs, but also mentors, investors, and other stakeholders with a collective goal of inclusive and sustainable growth through social entrepreneurship.

Over the years, the program has supported 238 SEs nationwide and awarded over Php20 million cash grants to help them strengthen their enterprises, widen their reach, and further uplift the lives of their communities.

"Evolution best represents the enhancements in our Sinag program over time to better address the needs of the broader SE ecosystem,” said BPI Foundation Executive Director Owen Cammayo. “Doing well by doing good as an economic and social imperative is more relevant now more than ever. This is the perfect time to increase our collective efforts to become more inclusive, responsible, and sustainable when doing business. This is the essence why we strongly support social enterprises.”

Delighted to continue its long-time partnership with BPI Foundation in empowering social enterprises, Bayan Academy President and Chairman Prof. Francisco “Jay” Bernardo said, “BPI Foundation together with Bayan Academy and other program partners will contribute and make available suitable resources to assist social enterprises in their journey to evolve. The BPI Sinag Evolution program fully supports the promotion of an enabling environment so social enterprises cannot just merely survive, and it doesn’t stop at thriving, but also allowing them to evolve.”

During the virtual launch, four Sinag alumni, JT Solis of Mayani, Catherine Diquit of Likhang Maragondon, Cecille Virtucio of Batangas Egg Producers Cooperation, and Lorielinda Bella Rago-Marte of Tagolwanen Women Weavers Association also talked about their experiences on how the program helped grow their social enterprises. “Kami ay maliit na social enterprise lamang and we are only months-old noong sumali kami dito. Because of BPI Sinag, we had a better understanding kung ano ba ang social enterprise. We met so many inspiring people. Nagkaroon kami ng better connections and network. The funding that we got from BPI Sinag really help us kasi ngayon nakapagpagawa na kami ng manufacturing hub,” said Ms. Catherine Diquit of Likhang Maragondon.

Together with its main implementing partner, Bayan Academy, BPI Foundation will continue its partnerships with BPI’s microfinance arm, BPI BanKo, together with Ayala Land, Start Up Village, and Villgro Philippines. As part of the program’s evolution, the foundation also sealed a collaboration with Entrego to boost the market access of SEs by providing reliable logistic solutions for the safe and timely delivery of their products.

Business challenge for social enterprises

The “Sinag Evolution” business challenge will open its doors again to social enterprises. Of 60 SEs who will qualify for the bootcamps and mentoring sessions, the Top 25 will be shortlisted for the selection of the Top 10, who will receive as much as Php300,000 cash grant.

Aside from the cash grants, BPI Foundation will provide Sinag SEs with an MBA-like experience through virtual mentoring sessions, which will include sessions on business strategy and planning, marketing, operations, finance, organization & HR development, and social innovation, among others. Sinag SEs will also benefit from market access through the Sinag Sari-Sari Store in Ayala malls nationwide through its partnership with Alagang Ayala Land.

The business challenge is open to social entrepreneurs who are 18 years old and above leading a registered social enterprise that has been operating for at least six months. The application period will run until June 30, 2022.

New offerings for the academe and sub-sectors

With the multi-stakeholder approach, the “Sinag Evolution” will also give opportunities to the members of the academe and the support intervenors of SEs through a customized management program and competition.

Aiming to encourage academic institutions to be at the active forefront of social entrepreneurship, BPI Foundation offers the BPI Sinag Social Entrepreneurship and Management Course for Educators. The course, which will focus on effective methodologies in teaching social entrepreneurship management, is open to the members of the academe, including school heads, administrators, and lead teachers who specialize in general entrepreneurship and business management.

The deadline for applications is on June 10, 2022, while the training will be from June 13 to 17. The participating educators will then submit their proposals and present them to an esteemed panel of judges. Five educators with the best proposals will win a cash grant of Php100,000 each.

For the SE Intervenors and Subs-sectors, BPI Foundation aims to collaborate with various organizations, including corporate foundations, NGOs, civil society organizations, and other government agencies, in promulgating social entrepreneurship as part of their corporate social responsibility programs.

The participants will be given the chance to learn about social entrepreneurship management and frameworks that may be used as interventions in the community that they support. In addition, they will be asked to present proposals to integrate social entrepreneurship in their existing programs to achieve better social impact in the communities they serve.

Interested participants may register until August 12, 2022, while the five-day bootcamp will be held from August 22 to 26. Five participants with the most viable proposals will win a cash grant of Php100,000 each.

The expanded partnership between of Tap DMV and WWE (NYSE: WWE) has given the WWE Universe here in the Philippines a reason to celebrate with its recently announced partnership that will broadcast WWE’s weekly longest running episodic show, Monday Night RAW and its UK’s developmental brand, NXT UK via TapGo, Tap DMV’s new subscription video-on-demand service.

To celebrate the partnership between Tap DMV and WWE, both companies hosted a roundtable discussion earlier with the former WWE United States Champion and currently one half of the reigning RAW Tag Team Champions, WWE Superstar, Riddle.

During the discussion, Riddle talks about how he is loving WWE. Despite being new and how he's still at the beginning of his run, he has done a lot of great stuff and lot of cool things already. He's been the United States champion and now he's tag teaming as RK-Bro with Randy Orton. Currently, they are the WWE RAW Tag Team Champion.

Riddle is one of the most charismatic Superstars right now in WWE. His carefree and lax demeanor are usually overlooked by his opponents that leaves them surprised when he finally uses his arsenal of strikes and submissions.

The Original Bro exploded into the scene by using his background in Mixed Martial Arts to take control of his opponents with his striking and grappling expertise. During his run in NXT, Riddle was able to dominate the tag team division with Pete Dunne in where they won the 2020 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classics. In a span of less than 3 weeks after winning the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classics, Riddle and Pete Dunne were able to capture the NXT Tag Team Championship by defeating The Undisputed ERA.

Since his move to the main roster, Riddle has won the United States Championship and is now sitting on top of the RAW Tag Team division alongside The Viper, Randy Orton as the reigning, defending, WWE RAW Tag Team Champions.

Premier Global nutrition company Herbalife Nutrition recently conducted a general nutrition quiz which reveals that only 19% of Filipino consumers got 50% of the answers correct in this quiz. The Philippines’ score was lower than the Asia Pacific (APAC) average of 23%.

Dr. Chin Kun-Wang, member, Nutrition Advisory Board, Herbalife Nutrition

The quiz was administered as part of Herbalife Nutrition’s Asia Pacific Nutrition Myths Survey 2020, which was conducted in March with 5,500 respondents from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. To test the nutrition knowledge of the survey participants, the quiz included a total of 48 “True or False” questions spanning nine nutrition areas - general nutrition, protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, caffeine, weight management, and breakfast.

“The results of the quiz and the survey show that there is a significant nutrition knowledge gap among Filipinos. We hope to help close the gap to empower them with the nutrition knowledge they need to make better nutrition choices,” said Sridhar Rajagopalan, Senior Director, Sub-Region Head, and General Manager of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines.

Only 7% among those surveyed said that they were extremely confident about their nutrition knowledge. Fifty-four percent claimed that they were only somewhat well-informed.

Filipino consumers, however, expressed that they believe in the importance of balanced nutrition. It is among the top three nutrition advice that they were most interested in along with how to improve ailment/condition through nutrition and managing weight through nutrition.

“This is a good sign, so the next step is helping them achieve this,” Rajagopalan said.

More results of the quiz was discussed during a recent online event headed by  Dr. Chin Kun-Wang, Member of the Nutrition Advisory Board of the Herbalife Nutrition as he talked about Managing Weight and Boosting Immune System.

What Filipinos Got Right and Wrong About Nutrition Knowledge

Most of the Filipino respondents (85%) falsely believe that one needs sufficient calcium intake at any age to optimize peak bone mass for bone health.

“Our peak bone mass (max bone size and strength) is dependent on calcium intake and reaches its peak by age 30. However, sufficient calcium intake throughout life can reduce the risk of osteoporosis,” Rajagopalan said.

When it comes to fats, 68% got it right that fats provide the body with energy but only 42% correctly believed that it helps the body absorb vitamins.

80% correctly said that exercise helps the body rebuild muscles and increase lean muscles. However, 51% of the respondents falsely believe that protein powder is not a healthy source of protein as compared to a protein found in natural foods.

“Protein powder can be as good as protein from natural foods if derived from high-quality sources. For instance, soy protein from soybeans is a complete protein, providing a full range of nine essential amino acids for the body’s nutrition requirements,” Rajagopalan added.

94% of the Filipino consumers were right in their belief that fruits and Vitamin C supplements can help boost immunity and resistance to infection. Among the APAC respondents, they were the highest in this belief.

Online Myths and Misinformation: Top Barrier to Gaining Accurate Nutrition Knowledge

While 47% of Filipino consumers believed that it is extremely important to be educated with proper and accurate nutrition knowledge, they also said that too much misinformation and myths online prevent them from gaining accurate nutrition knowledge (39%).

The other top barriers were lack of information from government websites and health authorities (22%) and the lack of information from healthcare professionals (17%).

And here are some of the more commonly-believed nutrition myths among consumers uncovered on the survey to show you the bigger picture:

A ground-breaking platform that generates projections based on a combination of selected scenarios and aids some of our leaders to make informed decisions is now at the frontlines of our country’s battle against the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The Feasibility Analysis of Syndromic Surveillance using Spatio-temporal Epidemiological Modeler for Early Detection of Diseases (FASSSTER) platform is now an important component in our government’s arsenal to help monitor and project the spread of COVID-19 in various locations in the country, according to Ateneo Professor and FASSSTER Project Head Dr. Ma. Regina Justina Estuar.

The program was discussed in depth during the Acts of Magis: Ateneans at the Forefront of a Pandemic webinar held last Friday, May 8. The webinar on FASSSTER is the first of four webinars that are scheduled to be held all Fridays of May. The webinar was helmed by Dr. Estuar and organized by the Ateneo de Manila University Research Council (URC) together with the Ateneo Research Institute of Science and Engineering (ARISE).

Dr. Estuar underscored the inherent value of the platform especially today, with a continued uptick in the number of cases in our country.

“There is a need for analytics for decision-making that is grounded in science. There is a need for an engine that can’t be turned off, to adjust to everyday feedback to synchronize with real data, to provide baseline numbers for simulated scenarios,” Dr. Estuar said. “If FASSSTER can do that, then FASSSTER can be the platform for COVID-19 in the Philippines.”

The platform has been used in various places in the country and various instances in the past, but in January, with the threat of the disease looming, Dr. Estuar emailed the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development to say that FASSSTER may be useful as we face the, at that time, possible spread of the virus in the country. In March, before the declaration of an enhanced community quarantine, FASSSTER than COVID-19 was formally launched.

FASSSTER outputs three things: the spatiotemporal spread of the disease or the transmission of the disease within a given time and area; the population at risk; and it also detects the early onset of an outbreak.

The FASSSTER platform sources its data from the Department of Health’s (DOH) Epidemiology Bureau COVID System, the Data Collect System of the Health Department , the Tanod COVID self-screening app, and other data sources in relation to security, social, and economic data.
From these data, FASSSTER presents a simulation platform where users can select scenarios based on different types of interventions they have put in place such as community quarantines, health interventions such as increasing the number of tests conducted, medical facilities, and contact tracing capacity, and individual interventions such as frequent handwashing and usage of face masks.

“What we provide are not the direct answers. What we give is a visualization tool that will enable users to see how our situation looks like today, and how our situation will change tomorrow, how we are going to affect our neighbors. That’s what we give them and we help them interpret it as well,” Dr. Estuar said.

While the Philippines continues to fight the spread of COVID-19, having relevant data that decision-makers can use as they chart the course of the country in the future is of paramount importance. And with the help of FASSSTER and the team of Dr. Estuar, the country is equipped with a tool that it can rely on as we try to win the war against COVID-19.

“The contribution of FASSSTER is providing a simulation to project those numbers. So, even if it’s not as accurate as we want it to be, it may not be as exact, but at least we have the data that we can see,” Dr. Estuar said.

To watch the entire webinar of Dr. Estuar about FASSSTER please click this link https://youtu.be/KXQbHaxiSCY. To stay updated about the other Acts of Magis: Ateneans at the Forefront of a Pandemic webinars scheduled to be held every Friday of May, visit facebook.com/ateneodemanila.
