COVID has been a palpable disruptor to local enterprises, triggering job losses, supply-chain problems, travel restrictions, and business continuity challenges en route to infecting over 140,000 Filipinos. Startups, which are typically seen as ‘industry disruptors,’ now find themselves in an unfamiliar position—as the disrupted.

A recent report by PwC Philippines revealed that almost 50% of tech startups are greatly concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on their operations.

Amid the pandemic, startups are faced with critical challenges—including capital shock and reduced consumer demand. Some are also struggling to survive as they experience movement challenges that are preventing growth and traction in building and scaling.

This according to Carlo Calimon, Director of Startup Village during a webinar series ‘Disruptors, Disrupted’ organized by ON3. Caliman was joined by Diane Eustaquio, Executive Director of IdeaSpace, in the panel discussion.

While many businesses have scaled-down, Calimon said that startups are busier than ever in the new normal.

According to PwC, 21% of startup founders say that the outbreak resulted in increased demand for their services and products while 49% started offering a new product/service during the Enhanced Community Quarantine.

This is a testament to the consumer shift to more digital lifestyles and the critical role of startups in creating new possibilities, enhancing growth, and finding critical solutions to new issues brought on by COVI-19.

Over 50% of today’s Fortune 500 companies were founded during an economic contraction and 50 of the fabled ‘tech unicorns’ were born during the last financial crisis. Crisis, Calimon points out, also “presented opportunities for a lot of startups to step up to the plate.”

He cited Kumu, MyKuya, AIDE, and Zagana as rising stars in the new normal, because “[…] people started looking at these startups and allowing them to take advantage of the new attention to generating more traction and business for themselves.”

Maintaining customer relevance

Now that essential products and services have become top of mind for many Filipino consumers, non-essential startups are faced with a crisis of relevance. For them, it is now pivot or perishes.

“When you say be agile or be adaptive,” said Eustaquio. “It is really listening to the customer. Focus on the customer experience. When you’re able to focus on the customer experience, you’ll always be developing a product that is relevant to your customers—to the people who pay for your product.”

Eustaquio also advised startups to “COVID-proof” their startups so that their business is not just sustainable, but also attractive to investors.

According to Eustaquio, sustainability is a critical component during this unpredictable time. She posed the question, “Today, you’re making money. When the pandemic is over, is this product still relevant?”

While businesses will have their own unique issues, it has become astoundingly clear that innovation is and will continue to be very important during a crisis like COVID-19. And as innovation natives, the ability of startups to identify pockets of opportunity in crisis will be all but necessary in creating new possibilities in this new normal.

These ideas will be further explored in upcoming episodes of Disruptors, Disrupted, ON3’s three-part webinar series about the startup ecosystem in the Philippines during COVID-19. Stream the full webinar on-demand at ON3now.com.

Insular Life (InLife) and its HMO subsidiary, InLife Health Care (IHC) recently launched a total protection plan that combines term life insurance, hospital income, and health care solution.

Called “Total ProtectER,” it is a timely insurance package with three main benefits: six-month term life insurance, daily hospital income for six-months, and a one-time emergency care health plan.

“While it is true that the government continues to foot hospital bills of COVID-19 patients through PhilHealth, there is a limit to these benefits. Therefore, if you are a breadwinner, self-employed, a freelancer, or someone who just started to work, it is advisable to get Total ProtectER as a safety precaution because COVID-19 is covered under the term insurance and hospital income benefit of this product,” said InLife Sr. Executive Vice President and Chief Distribution Officer Raoul Antonio E. Littaua.

For the emergency care element, although pandemic diseases such as COVID-19 are not coverable under standard insurance policies, IHC has taken this on under an ex-gratia basis at least until December 31, 2020.

“I hope our kababayans will take advantage of this opportunity while it is still available. This is a good way to take charge of one’s health needs at a time like this,” added Littaua.

Total ProtectER provides life insurance benefits of P500,000 upon death due to natural or accidental causes, a P3,000 daily hospitalization income for up to 15 days if confinement is at least four days due to accidental injury or sickness (up to 15 days per hospital confinement, and a maximum of 90 days total hospitalization) within the six-month coverage period, and a one-time coverage of up to P100,000  on outpatient and inpatient care  for emergency cases due to accidents, viral and bacterial illnesses, and specific conditions.

The emergency care benefit is valid for one year or up until it is used, whichever comes first. Since no medical exams are required – just a health declaration – to purchase the product, customers may get it directly from IHC’s online store at https://shop.insularhealthcare.com.ph/total-protect-er.html.

There are two Total ProtectER premium rates to choose from: P11,750 or P12,450, with the latter including emergency care in Metro Manila’s top 6 hospitals. It is for individuals aged 18 to 64 years old.
On its 110th anniversary, InLife continues to offer products and services that are relevant to its customers’ needs.

For more information on Total ProtectER, interested parties may chat via https://shop.insularhealthcare.com.ph/ or  email support@insularhealthcare.com.ph

With more and more of us turning to bike as a mode of transportation during the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ), SM Supermalls has created bike parking facilities across its malls.

With organized and secure parking zones designated solely for bicycles, SM hopes to make the riding experience safe and convenient for the growing number of bike commuters, especially in communities where SM malls are located. And the good news is that these spaces are currently free of charge.

For customers who prefer to protect their bikes from the elements, there are covered bike parking areas in SM Aura Premier, The Podium, S Maison, and SM Marikina.

For customers who enjoy the convenience of street-level parking, Mall of Asia, SM By the BAY, SM Megamall, SM BF Paranaque, and SM Olongapo Central are among the malls that offer bike parking areas near the mall’s entrance.

Customers have one less thing to worry about when it comes to bike parking safety with on-duty guards manning and securing bike parking areas at all SM malls. Other security measures such as at SM City North Edsa require customers to register in a logbook and submit ID in exchange for a bike parking pass as an added layer of security.

With SM’s bike-friendly facilities, customers can look forward to a safe, convenient, and enjoyable biking experience. Importantly, SM aims to support inclusive mobility especially during the MECQ, and hopes to encourage more people to take up biking as a healthy and environment-friendly alternative means of transportation beyond the pandemic, which is part of SM’s Green Movement campaign promoting clean, green, sustainable communities.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students welcome a new school year differently. No more flurry of activity in the morning or a rush to make it on time to school, as classes from preschool to college shift to online.

That’s a big adjustment, for sure, but there are a few things that students and their parents can do that will make online classes a breeze. Here are some tips from Araneta City:

Gear up with the right tech

The quality of a student’s experience during online classes will depend on a lot of things, but one of the most important is the gadget that they have with them. Whether they want to use a laptop, a tablet, or a smartphone in the conduct of their classes, it’s good to have a reliable device that has a high-quality screen, great cameras, and a dependable speaker and mic combo. If the student in your life wants to deck out their setup, they can up the ante by investing in mechanical keyboards and a professional headset. Who said learning can’t be cool?

Digital Walker, I-Studio, and Xiaomi in Gateway Mall; AV Surfer in Ali Mall; and Gadget Worx in Farmers Plaza carry a wide array of gadgets that are great for online classes. So, whatever device a student needs, whatever their budget, they can find the tech that works for them at Araneta City.

Don’t forget the essentials

Having classes online doesn’t mean that students could get away with doing all of their school work on their devices. It’s essential to break out their pen and notebook to write down essential points in their lessons. According to a study published in Psychological Science, writing with pen and paper does wonder when it comes to retaining more information. So, don’t forget to pick up a reliable pen and notebook.

Araneta City is the perfect destination for school essentials, with a variety of shops like National Bookstore in Ali Mall and Farmers Plaza, and Fully Booked and Office Warehouse in Gateway Mall. Students will surely find things to get them ready for their online classes.

Spruce up the wardrobe

Getting in the right headspace for class, especially when you’re at home, can be a bit tricky. A simple way to get students in the mood for learning is by having them dress up as if they’re leaving home and heading for school. Wearing clothes that are presentable but comfy can really do wonders when it comes to getting amped for online classes.

Shop the latest looks at Rustan's Department Store, Mango, and Marks & Spencer in Gateway Mall, or Plains & Prints and Giordano in Ali Mall. Farmers Plaza also has Oxygen, Petrol, and Dickies USA, for those back-to-school OOTDs.

Complete the entire outfit by copping a few new kicks from Adidas and Royal Sporting House in Ali Mall, Nike, and Vans in Gateway Mall, or Rusty Lopez in Farmers Plaza.

Prepare a workspace

Having a dedicated place where students can have their online classes and work on their school requirements allows them to focus on their tasks. It’s best to place their workstation in a well-lit and ventilated area. You can also make this area more conducive to learning by placing a few plants on and around the work desk. Some studies have shown that plants can be helpful in improving the concentration and memory of people. This can be helpful especially for students who have difficulty getting stuff done with the distractions around them. It also serves as a visual respite after long hours glued to the computer.

Pick up some house plants and gardening supplies from the Farmers Garden in Araneta City and bring some life to your student’s workspace.

Take a break

Studying from home can be stressful in its own way, so encourage students to take periodic breaks and relax. One of the best ways to take a breather from school work is by grabbing a quick snack. Ordering delightful treats and having it delivered can be a great way to help a student escape the stress of school work.

Araneta City has a lot of great dining options that deliver. Take a pick from the long list of dining destinations and have your food delivered via the Araneta City Assist (through the Araneta City website or mobile app) or the Araneta Citi-zen Personal Shopper (through the myKuya mobile app) when online classes get a little too demanding.

For more information about Araneta City, promos and the latest offerings, like and follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

All things and particles naturally move downwards, towards the ground we stand on, because of gravity. Any virus and/or air droplets are not exceptions to this rule in physics.

Floors are generally dirty; they can be avenues for dust, soil, human skin, bacteria, and viral particles. When a person talks or coughs, air droplets are excreted. These air droplets might carry bacteria or viral particles. Initially, these droplets float in the air; eventually, they can either stick on the items people touch (pens, paper, phones, car keys, etc.) or settle on the floors.

These surfaces are among the most common contact points for objects that frequently move from one place to another, such as footwear and wheeled equipment. Any bacterial or viral particle may lodge and be carried by these items. The soles of the shoes and slippers you wear are very dirty – they might be carrying pathogens for infectious diseases.

In line with this, it is essential that proper hand hygiene and regular cleaning have to be done at work and at home. These procedures help prevent the spread of viruses by eliminating microorganisms and contaminants on objects that may potentially harbor them.

There are certain facilities that require more stringent, more frequent round-the-clock disinfection scheduling and maintenance. In the hospital setting, these include surgical operating rooms, intensive care units, isolation wards, and laboratories. In the industrial setting, these include power plants, food manufacturing, and processing stations. The workforce that enters in these areas has to be clean and microbe-free. Besides wearing personal protective equipment, placement of sanitizing floor mats in the workplace can also help enhance infection control.

When placed in key strategic areas in the venue, particularly in entrances and along hallways, these sanitizing floor mats can aid in minimizing the spread of microbes within that area. The dirt and bacteria in an employee’s footwear can be removed after stepping on the mats.

One of the most trusted brands of decontaminating floor mats in the market today is Decomat. A product of Italy-based medical supplies developer Vigeo S.R.L., Decomat is a multi-layer disposable decontaminating mat designed for use in all environments that demand optimum hygiene and zero presence of contaminating agents.

Decomat helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases through its powerful antibacterial glue, which traps dust particles, dirt, and bacteria; hence, preventing the spread of microorganisms. Each mat is made up of 30 adhesives and numbered polyethylene sheets and has a thickness of not more than 2 millimeters. A full-length adhesive sheet on the bottom ensures complete and reliable adherence to surfaces, while a non-adhesive strip along one side of the mat allows for easy removal of each used layer. Decomat comes in a handy 5-mat dispenser folder that allows easy withdrawal of each mat while keeping the remaining mats properly stored, and the lightweight yet durable folder allows convenient handling and storage. The floor mat was constructed and engineered in a method that provides reliable and convenient disinfection in the workplace.

Mats are initially available in three color options (white, blue, and green) and three sizes: DK 450 (45 x 120 cm), DK 600 (60 x 120 cm), and DK 900 (90 x 120 cm), but customers can also opt for other colors and sizes upon request.

With its useful disinfecting capabilities, Decomat is a solid investment for those who want to lessen the chances of not only COVID-19 contamination but also other infectious diseases, in their workplaces. Cleaning the soles of footwear is made reliable and effective through Decomat.

In the Philippines, Decomat is available exclusively via HealthSolutions, the country’s leading marketer and distributor of high-quality healthcare supplies and equipment. To learn more about this product and other healthcare solutions under the HealthSolutions product portfolio, visit the company’s official website at www.healthsolutions.com.ph/ or get in touch with them through their official LinkedIn page at www.linkedin.com/company/healthsolutions-enterprises-inc.

It is a testament to the resilience of Filipinos to find opportunity in adversity. Consumption shift has been evident in the past months since the quarantine period started, with more Filipinos finding ways to create economic activity to adjust to the conditions dictated by the pandemic. From this and the current consumer behavior, we have learned the following to help our businesses thrive post-COVID.

Optimizing E-Commerce

From small households selling home-cooked meals through Facebook and big companies establishing their own online shopping sites, businesses have turned to e-commerce to reach customers. At Hanabishi, we quickly put a system in place once the quarantine period began. In less than two months, our e-commerce facility was up and running through our website, www.myhanabishi.com. We also provided our customers with the option to have their orders delivered or picked up at our warehouse.

Recognizing Your Company’s Strengths and Capabilities

Our business may not be directly about health and safety, but we were able to adjust to the new normal by relying on our strengths and capabilities.

We noticed that more households are making their homes the center of their lives, that they are finding ways to make their lives comfortable. They have started to pursue their passion for the arts, baking, cooking, among others to make their lives less stress-free and more comfortable. Having the best home experience became their goal.

When we learned that interest in baking products has increased, we knew that our baking equipment will be in demand so we made sure that they would be readily available through our website. The same thing goes for our cooking equipment when we noticed how Filipinos have started to bring the Samgyupsal experience to their homes.

We considered all these in reviewing our operating model. We relied on our strength as an appliance manufacturer and boosted our capability to supply what the market demands.

Implementing Short-Term Interventions and Streamlining Non-Core Assets

Cutting costs, securing liquidity, and adjusting production has helped us maintain our operations during this period. Conserving resources can help businesses last longer.

Reinventing value chains must also be considered as the pandemic has greatly disrupted the supply chain of global trade. Businesses must learn to streamline their non-core assets and activities.

Learning to Adapt

As I mentioned before, we saw Filipinos flex their entrepreneurial skills in the past months. We saw them selling their own recipes online, creating new businesses to augment their income. It is inspiring to see how quickly our Kababayans adapted to the new normal. Speed and adaptability are the competencies we need during a time of crisis.

Creating a Recovery Plan

Once consumer confidence returns, we must be ready to respond. Have a recovery plan that should be able to address what happens in the pandemic. Re-engineer your business to provide clarity and genuine stability amid the chaos and take time to improve the skills of your people. Our managers should be able to envision our objective. To do this, we business owners must provide them with the necessary knowledge and confidence to further their execution skills.

Recognizing That Recovery Will Be Gradual

There’s no quick-fix solution to the challenges that businesses face today. As the world adapts to the changes brought about by the pandemic, businesses should be mindful of consumer sentiment.

We have learned from past crises that it takes months and years to return to what we deem as the normal way of doing things. Recovery from the 2003 SARS pandemic, the 9/11 attacks, and the 2008 financial crisis took some time, and we can expect the same thing with the COVID situation.

More importantly, we have learned from these crises that we will eventually recover. Getting there may take some time, but we will get there. Our resilience and faith in our abilities and in one another will see us through.

Jasper Ong is the president of Hanabishi, one of the country’s leading appliance brands. He took over the day-to-day business and management of the brand when his parents retired in 2006. He is credited for growing Hanabishi’s sales revenue by 30% year-on-year following its nationwide expansion and introduction of new product lines. He is a graduate of Manufacturing Engineering and Management at De La Salle University.

Through challenging times, NutriAsia’s own frontliners have remained dedicated to keeping shelves stocked with Filipinos’ favorite and trusted food products. In recognition of this, children of NutriAsia employees are honoring and further protecting them through their Salamat BayaNAI program.

Launched by Batang NutriAsia, an in-house summer program for children of NutriAsia employees, the Salamat BayaNAI program saw 3,800 face shields assembled and donated to NutriAsia merchandisers and employees for their protection. Despite the risks, these merchandisers served as the company’s front line in ensuring supermarkets and grocery stores remain stocked with NutriAsia products throughout the community quarantine, while employees from departments such as Human Resources, Total Quality Management, R&D, and Supply Chain also continued to report to work on-site, making sure that all operations remained consistent throughout the situation.

Face shields were chosen for both their practicality and the protection they impart against COVID-19 and other diseases.

The program also aims to give these employees emotional support, as the Batang NutriAsia kids added heartwarming handwritten thank-you notes to the frontliners.

“We want these frontliners to know that their work is appreciated, and their bravery is not forgotten,” said Sabine Flaminiano, Salamat BayaNAI project lead and a Batang NutriAsia graduate in her own right.

“Seeing the reactions of the store merchandisers and employees as they received our care packages was memorable—as their hard work and sacrifice are valued and recognized, this had brought big smiles and a boost to their morale.”

The MERIT of Batang NutriAsia

Batang NutriAsia is a corporate program for children of NutriAsia employees who want to know more about their parents’ work. The Salamat BayaNAI program is a culmination of Batang NutriAsia’s MERIT (Malasakit, Excellence, Respect, Ingenuity with Integrity, and Teamwork) pillars, especially Malasakit as it raised awareness of the need to care for others.

NutriAsia Human Resources Group Head Jun Corpus shares that through Batang NutriAsia, they are able to teach children universally critical work and life values to help build a generation of values-led, principled Filipinos set for a brighter future.

By starting and executing initiatives, programs, and projects that involve the family members of NutriAsia employees, the values of the company are further strengthened across the entire family, proving they are truly foundational, action-oriented, can drive results, and ideal in any situation.

Founded in 1991, NutriAsia Group is a powerhouse of beloved, timeless, and iconic Filipino food brands that include Datu Puti, Silver Swan, Mang Tomas, UFC, Papa Catsup, Jufran; UFC Cooking Sauces and Meal Mixes; Golden Fiesta Cooking Oil; and Locally Blended Juice Drink and Merci Buco Coco water.
