Adventures of a Diva Princess

With the changing weather conditions, maintaining good health and fitness has become increasingly important. Unpredictable weather patterns can often hinder individuals from visiting the gym or engaging in outdoor activities, especially now that the rainy season is here.

Recognizing this challenge, Santé, a premier natural health and wellness product and service provider, introduces a range of indoor workout routines, ensuring individuals can stay fit and healthy regardless of the weather. These exercises are easy, convenient, and require minimal equipment since they can be performed in the comfort of your home, allowing individuals to maintain their fitness goals.

Here are five easy indoor exercises recommended by Santé:

Stationary walking. This exercise serves as an excellent alternative to outdoor walks, requiring only a pair of shoes and some uplifting music. It is a perfect starting point for individuals looking to incorporate regular exercise into their routine, even during monsoon season. Stationary walking is also a safe exercise option for pregnant women.

On-spot jogging. This fun activity allows individuals to burn calories like normal jogging, without leaving their homes. All that is needed is a pair of running shoes and comfortable clothing for unrestricted movement. Whether enjoying a favorite sports match or listening to music, on-spot jogging provides a convenient way to engage in cardio exercise.

Planking, squats, pull-ups. Strength training exercises using body weight can be performed at home and offer benefits such as improved bone density, increased muscle mass, and effective weight management. Exercises like planking, squats, chest press, pull-ups, and lunges provide an opportunity to strengthen muscles without the need for special equipment. For those seeking additional resistance, affordable exercise equipment such as exercise balls, resistance bands, or weights can be incorporated.

Mat Pilates. This activity is a holistic exercise form that focuses on concentration, precise movement patterns, and controlled breathing. By engaging abdominal and lower back muscles, Pilates helps strengthen the core, improves flexibility and posture, and promotes relaxation. All that is required is a mat and comfortable clothing to fully enjoy the benefits of this exercise.

Yoga. This is an excellent exercise that enhances flexibility, promotes inner peace, and aids in weight loss. Practicing yoga indoors on a yoga mat, wearing comfortable clothing, allows individuals to experience various poses and breathing exercises that contribute to overall well-being.

Aside from engaging in indoor exercises, it is important to fuel the body with healthy drinks. Santé emphasizes the significance of consuming nutritious beverages, such as Santé's Fit N' Trim. This 3-in-1 fat burner and energy booster serves as your reliable fitness partner.

Santé's Fit N' Trim contains key ingredients, such as L-Carnitine, which facilitates the transportation of fats into cells for energy, green tea that stimulates calorie burning and reduces body fat, and organic young barley grass that aids in weight loss.

"At Santé, we are dedicated to helping individuals live healthier lives by providing natural health and wellness products. So, if you want to take control of your diet and physical activity, Santé's Fit N' Trim is an excellent choice," says Joey Marcelo, CEO of Santé. "With organic barley grass providing fiber to keep you feeling fuller for longer, and the combined benefits of green tea, L-Carnitine, and lemon, Fit N' Trim supports weight loss and enhances physical performance."

Headquartered in the Philippines and with a presence in New Zealand and seven other countries, Santé has been a prime mover in the health and wellness industry for 15 years. The company is engaged in the direct selling and retailing of premier natural health and wellness products and services. September 29 is World Heart Day all around the globe.

More than just a celebration, World Heart Day was established in the hopes that it could reach more people and be able to spread awareness about the perils of heart diseases and stroke.

Sanofi recognizes that this is a unique time to be worried about heart health and learn more about the steps that should be taken to ensure risk-free living, especially under a cloud of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s heartbreaking to see those with comorbidities battle a critical to severe form of the virus- forcing them to put their lives on hold, be isolated from family, friends and people who matters most to them,” Amal Makhloufi Benchouk, the Philippines Country Lead for Sanofi, shared in her opening remarks.

Statistics have shown that 7 out of 10 people are diagnosed with hypertension, and 2 out of 10 hypertension patients die. Sanofi continues to respond to the challenge of dealing with comorbidities during this time, by emphasizing the need to address the lack of awareness and limited access to cardiovascular disease management.

“Cardiovascular Disease remains the number 1 killer in the world, resulting in about 18.6 Million deaths worldwide and over 520 million people globally living with cardiovascular disease that has been disproportionately affected by the pandemic,” she remarked.

Sanofi’s mission has led them to create the Empower Hypertension Program, which aims to deliver awareness, prevention, and management to patients. The program provides enlisted patients with free coaching sessions led by nurse educators to arm them with information that tackles myths and facts about the disease, among others.

Sanofi has also partnered with Omron, a leading medical electronics company, to extend a 20% to 25% discount to patients, encouraging them to procure the technology in order to monitor their blood pressure regularly.

Sanofi remains committed to its mission to promote hypertension management at the early stages and to inspire individuals to take control of their own health.

We all need strong, healthy bones. After all, they comprise the hard framework on which the entire body is built. Without them, we all won’t survive, as there will be nothing to support our muscles and nothing to protect our vital organs. We won’t even have blood, as the components that make it are made in—you guessed it—the bone marrow.

Now, like any other body part, our bones are always at risk of contracting diseases and disorders, the most debilitating being osteoporosis (severe weakening of the bones) and osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis). This is especially true as we age since our calcium levels generally decrease when we grow older. As such, it is imperative that we get our bone density checked out regularly to make sure it does not fall below –1.0; otherwise, we are at risk of suffering bone-related maladies.

Calcium, of course, is one of the 22 minerals that the body needs to be strong, healthy, and functioning optimally. Some 90% of the calcium we get is stored in our bones, and this calcium deposit is what makes our skeletal system dense and hard, not brittle, and fragile. Meaning, the more calcium we have in our bones, the stronger and healthier they will be.

Unfortunately, our body’s ability to absorb calcium wanes in our lifetime, which means we need to make sure we are getting enough of this mineral every day. The good news is that calcium is abundant in a variety of food, the most obvious being milk and dairy products. Other good sources of calcium are green vegetables, like broccoli and bok choy; fruits, such as oranges; and nuts, specifically almonds.

We should also consider supplementing our daily diet with calcium supplements—ideally with vitamin D already included as it helps the body better absorb calcium. This is exactly what CaD3 offers: a potent combination of calcium + vitamin D that is sure to keep the calcium levels in our bone high and healthy. That’s because CaD3 provides as much as 40% elemental calcium, most of which will be absorbed by the body due to the serving of vitamin D that CaD3 serves up. This same vitamin will also enable our body to absorb the calcium we are getting from the natural food sources previously mentioned.

It is important to remember, though, that a healthy, balanced diet and CaD3 supplementation are not enough to ensure strong, healthy bones. Another component to strengthening our bones is exercise, given how bones are just like our muscles in that they, too, respond to physical stimulation. The best exercises in this case are weight-bearing exercises, like walking, jogging, and dancing, and resistance training, like weightlifting and bodyweight workouts.

We should also watch carefully what we eat and avoid bad-for-the-bones food. Top of mind here are salty treats since high sodium levels can reduce the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Similarly, we should also minimize our intake of sugary food and caffeinated beverage since both have ingredients that inhibit calcium absorption.

Maintaining strong, healthy bones can be a lot of work, but it is certainly possible even as we grow older. All we need is to eat well, avoid certain food, exercise regularly, and, of course, take a tablet or two of CaD3—the supplement that will make your bones hard. You may get it online at www.mypharma.ph

One of the most important nutrients that every person needs is protein. According to Dr. Julian Alvarez, member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board, protein is vital to a healthy diet.

“It is one of the essential building blocks for many cell components in the body. Without enough protein, it can be difficult to sustain a balanced diet and reach your health goals. Protein is not stored, so we need to consume it in a continuous way,” Dr. Alvarez said.

Protein can be found in red meat, fish, eggs, whole dairy, soy, peas, whole grains, and nuts.

“It is recommended that people get 50% of their protein from plants. Soy is a great option because it’s a plant protein of high quality and digestibility,” Dr. Alvarez said.

Dr. Alvarez is a Sports Medicine specialist and Sports Physiology expert. He has also been a team doctor in professional basketball and footballs in the Spanish Major Leagues and a Sports Medicine Professor in Miguel Hernandez and Alicante Universities.

He was the guest speaker in the most recent Herbalife Nutrition eWellness Tour presented by

Herbalife Nutrition Philippines and shared ways in which people can practice correct nutrition.

Likewise, vitamins and minerals are micronutrients that the body needs to maintain sustainable health.

“Unlike macronutrients, you only need miniscule amounts of micronutrients to maintain good health,” Dr. Alvarez said.

Hydration is also important as water helps maintain the normal regulation of the body’s temperature and physical cognitive functions.

“Your daily water intake may affect your mental as well as your physical performance,” Dr. Alvarez said.

He added that that in standard conditions (when one is not doing exercise and not in a hot environment), it is recommended to consume 2.5-3 liters a day and to consume more when doing exercise. Water also plays an important part in digestion.

When it comes to maintaining a healthy digestive system, fiber is likewise essential. The latest scientific research has shown that the bacteria in the body’s gut likes to be fed with fiber and fiber diets can help create a more diverse and friendly microbial system.

Fats, meanwhile, are a diverse group of nutrients that have a varied range of functions in our bodies. They provide energy and help with the absorption of some nutrients (like vitamins A and D) and the body requires some amount of fats in order to work properly. Not all fats are the same, though.

“Healthy fats play a key role in our bodies. They help maintain normal blood pressure and triglyceride levels and are needed for normal function of your vision, brain and heart. Some of these healthy fats are also considered essential. Therefore, we have to consume them through foods,” Dr. Alvarez said.

At the end of the day, a balanced nutrition, a healthy active lifestyle, and the best supplements are the three things that everybody needs.

As we continue the fight against COVID-19, one of the biggest killers in the country remains overlooked — Tuberculosis (TB). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Philippines has the highest incidence rate of active TB among all Asian countries.

Today, many TB-affected individuals in the country dismiss getting checked due to the fear of contracting COVID-19, lack of education towards treatment, and many Filipinos perceiving it as a low-risk disease. To better understand the current state of TB in the Philippines, it is important to know the different types of TB prevalent today, early symptoms and their effects, and how to properly treat it.

Early symptoms of TB and causes

TB is an airborne disease, and is not transmissible when sharing utensils with a person with TB. It is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which affects the lungs and spreads through the air when a TB-infected individual coughs, sneezes, or spits. It generally affects all age groups, especially children and adults with underlying conditions such as HIV, malnutrition, or diabetes. Adults who smoke tobacco also have a higher risk of contracting the disease.

Common symptoms include chronic coughing that lasts more than two weeks, weight loss, fever, and night sweats. If you ever experience these symptoms, it is best to visit the nearest health center or TB clinic right away to get checked up. If you are unsure of their location, you can use the online self-assessment tool — https://assessment.tbfree.ph/ — to find the nearest health center or TB clinic in your area.

The different types of Tuberculosis

TB can be classified into two types of infections, active TB and latent TB. In the case of active TB, the individual who is carrying the organism has active symptoms and can transmit the infection to other people. On the other hand, those who have latent TB do not exhibit any of the symptoms since their immunity is able to fight off the infection. However, at some point in their life, the bacteria can reactivate and become an active TB case.

TB can directly affect different parts of your body. For instance, the most common form of TB is Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB) which primarily affects a patient’s lungs. Another is Extra Pulmonary Tuberculosis (EPTB), a form of TB that affects other parts of your organs and body including lymphatic, pleural, and bone or joint disease which are the most common, while pericardial, meningeal and disseminated (miliary) forms are more likely to result in a fatal outcome.

In some other cases, the TB bacteria can also be resistant to the drugs used to treat TB which classifies as Drug-resistant TB (DRTB). Though, if a person is classified under Multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), then the TB bacteria is resistant to at least isoniazid and rifampin, the two most potent TB drugs. Patients who fall under MDR-TB undergo a different type of treatment. Drug susceptible TB (DSTB) is the exact opposite. A person who is infected with TB bacteria that are fully susceptible, TB drugs will be effective as long as it is taken properly.

TB detection and treatment

Despite being infectious and potentially fatal, TB can be cured with proper treatment and early detection. The first thing people with presumptive TB need to do is schedule a chest x-ray test. If it is detected as possible TB, ask your doctor for a TB sputum diagnostic test to confirm if it is really TB. It is best advised to take the sample in the morning right before eating. Patients must then gargle water and take their sputum samples outdoors or in an open and airy place away from other people. If results come back positive, the patient must return to their doctor to begin treatment.

TB medicine is free at the nearest health center or TB clinic in your area. However, Anti-TB medicine is not like other antibiotics that are only taken for a week or two since it must be taken for at least six (6) months. Patients who are undergoing treatment may also experience mild headaches as one of the side effects but there may also be other causes. If you experience this, it is best to return to your doctor immediately for a consultation. Additionally, the National TB Control Program (NTP) does not recommend vitamins or any supplements, but it is not prohibited. Remember, it’s even more important to finish treatment to be #TBFree.

Do your part for a #TBFreePH

Despite the ongoing pandemic, the Department of Health (DOH) is gathering more government support through the amendment of the National TB Law to increase funding and efforts for the National TB Control Program in 2022. In line with these initiatives, mobile chest x-ray vans that can provide TB detection results as fast as ten minutes will begin city-wide sweeps. With this, TB detection processing will be made quicker and should help solve mobility restrictions posed by the pandemic.

TB is curable and can be attained if every individual does their part to support, educate, and encourage fellow Filipinos to to complete their TB treatment and take anti-TB drugs regularly, so they can end the spread of the disease and live a healthier TB-free life. For more information about TB, visit www.tbfree.ph or check out the Facebook page of #TBFreePH.

The latest research findings from the team of Professor Yang Zifeng from the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease in Guangzhou, China, have showed that Chinese medicine Lianhua Qingwen has an effective inhibitory action on the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2.

Yang mentioned that focusing on the development of Delta variant, his team had been researching its diagnosis, medication, and prevention. As to the medication, the drugs which played a critical role in 2020 still work in dealing with Delta variant, for instance, the Lianhua Qingwen Capsules developed and produced by Yiling Pharmaceutical, and some monomers extracted from herbs.

Experiments show that these drugs all have inhibition functions against the Delta variant, and Lianhua Qingwen has displayed obvious and stable in-vitro antiviral functions against both Alpha, Beta, and Delta variant.

What the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease in Guangzhou is doing now also includes the research and development of vaccines, and how to integrate the use of drugs such as Lianhua Qingwen and vaccination to provide double protection for people.

Insular Life (InLife) and its HMO subsidiary, InLife Health Care (IHC) recently launched a total protection plan that combines term life insurance, hospital income, and health care solution.

Called “Total ProtectER,” it is a timely insurance package with three main benefits: six-month term life insurance, daily hospital income for six-months, and a one-time emergency care health plan.

“While it is true that the government continues to foot hospital bills of COVID-19 patients through PhilHealth, there is a limit to these benefits. Therefore, if you are a breadwinner, self-employed, a freelancer, or someone who just started to work, it is advisable to get Total ProtectER as a safety precaution because COVID-19 is covered under the term insurance and hospital income benefit of this product,” said InLife Sr. Executive Vice President and Chief Distribution Officer Raoul Antonio E. Littaua.

For the emergency care element, although pandemic diseases such as COVID-19 are not coverable under standard insurance policies, IHC has taken this on under an ex-gratia basis at least until December 31, 2020.

“I hope our kababayans will take advantage of this opportunity while it is still available. This is a good way to take charge of one’s health needs at a time like this,” added Littaua.

Total ProtectER provides life insurance benefits of P500,000 upon death due to natural or accidental causes, a P3,000 daily hospitalization income for up to 15 days if confinement is at least four days due to accidental injury or sickness (up to 15 days per hospital confinement, and a maximum of 90 days total hospitalization) within the six-month coverage period, and a one-time coverage of up to P100,000  on outpatient and inpatient care  for emergency cases due to accidents, viral and bacterial illnesses, and specific conditions.

The emergency care benefit is valid for one year or up until it is used, whichever comes first. Since no medical exams are required – just a health declaration – to purchase the product, customers may get it directly from IHC’s online store at https://shop.insularhealthcare.com.ph/total-protect-er.html.

There are two Total ProtectER premium rates to choose from: P11,750 or P12,450, with the latter including emergency care in Metro Manila’s top 6 hospitals. It is for individuals aged 18 to 64 years old.
On its 110th anniversary, InLife continues to offer products and services that are relevant to its customers’ needs.

The Philippines ranked 4th in the World Health Index, a ranking of healthiest and least healthy markets across the globe that was revealed during the recent global health survey commissioned by the A.S. Watson Group, the world’s largest international health and beauty retailer. Over 5,500 consumers across 10 markets in Asia and Europe aged 15-60 participated in the survey from November to December last year to share their thoughts on a wide range of health topics.

The Netherlands topped the healthiest market list, followed by Singapore, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, Malaysia, Mainland China, Ukraine, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Thailand.

Other takeaways of the survey:

Happier People are Healthier.  91% of the respondents believe that smiling and laughing have a lot of health benefits. Yet only 66% smile enough due to stress. By generation, Gen Z smiles more and are happier than the more mature groups including Gen Y, Gen X, and Boomers. And Gen Z tends to consider themselves as healthy.

Family and Health are by Far the Most Important Aspects of Life.  When it comes to ranking the importance of life aspects, Family (87%) and Health (84%) top the list, with Wealth and Love (33% and 32%) in the third and fourth with a wide gap. Malina Ngai, Group COO of the A.S. Watson Group and CEO of A.S. Watson Asia and Europe believes that “if the survey was being conducted two months later in February this year, I am sure this result will even be more pronounced with people putting family and health at the very top priority in life.”

Credible Information Matters. As fake news and information flood the internet and social media, consumers nowadays tend to seek health information from credible sources. The research revealed 61% still commonly see a doctor when feeling unwell and 43% go in-store to get OTC medication. Yet only 15% of respondents turn to pharmacists for advice.

The A.S. Watson Group believes that more and more people will seek the help of pharmacists as they are reliable, professional, and easily accessible. Watsons Philippines has a strong network of 1,436 pharmacists nationwide. More than just dispensing medicines, the pharmacists are patient advocates ensuring that the right medication is given through review, implementation of prescription, and detection of therapeutic incompatibilities.

How to Stay Healthy.  To lead a healthier lifestyle, over 80% of the respondents believe that enough sleep, a healthy diet, and regular exercise can keep them healthy. But 40% of them fail to do so. More and more people (60%) are interested in taking vitamins and dietary supplements to improve their health.

At the A.S. Watson Group, 1 billion shoppers bought health products last year and sales for the health category increased 11% year on year. The insight from the Group shows that there are more and more people are investing in their health and well-being with vitamins and supplements booming globally at a 12% growth year on year.

In the Philippines, Watson’s health business is growing at 18% year-to-date, with vitamins experiencing a phenomenal 132% growth versus last year. Clearly, more Filipinos take a proactive approach in ensuring they stay healthy and protected especially in this time of global health crisis. With this, Watsons expanded its product range for vitamins and health essential related products to further meet the people’s needs

Let’s all stay healthy and happy. Watsons Call & Deliver ensures safe and convenient access to medicines and personal care essentials. The expanding Watsons hubs where customers may contact have dedicated riders allowing the customers to stay safe at home.

Did you know that breast cancer accounted for one-third of new cancer cases for females in the Philippines in 2018? According to The Global Cancer Observatory, the international agency for research on cancer, breast cancer cases amounted to 25,000 out of the almost 80,000 local cancer cases reported last year.

While most experts point out that there is no known cause of breast cancer, most agree that there are ways to reduce the risk.

AXA Philippines, one of the leading insurance providers in the country, offers various health insurance plans to help you prepare for unexpected health setbacks. Prevention is also important. Dr. Rachael Marie Rosario, executive director of the Philippine Cancer Society, a non-profit organization that seeks to help the Filipino cope with cancer through education, has these tips to help you protect yourself against breast cancer:

Have regular health checkups.

"Early detection can save lives. It improves the chances of getting cured," says Dr. Rosario. She adds that when breast cancer is detected early, patients only needed a one-time operation. The American Cancer Society has said that a patient would need several treatments, depending on the stage of the disease, if breast cancer was detected late. Treatments usually include surgery and radiation therapy, often along with chemo or drug therapies before or after surgery. Treatment for metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread to other parts of the body) is usually a systemic (drug) therapy. Experts advise women to do breast self-examination once in a while and to consult a doctor if they suspect something is wrong. Check out this link for the how-to on the breast self-exam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtJPJrCeKdg

Live a healthy lifestyle.

A healthy lifestyle is primary prevention. This means a balanced diet and maintaining an ideal weight. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, says Dr. Rosario. If you do not have the time to go to the gym, even the simplest physical activities like walking and cleaning the house will help.

Educate yourself.

Dr. Rosario says that there is a lack of awareness of breast cancer among Filipinos. Many patients would consult a doctor only when the cancer was in a late stage. She says there were many factors that could increase the risk of having breast cancer such as having no children by the age of 30, a family history of breast cancer, and early menstruation or late menopause. If a woman has one or more of these factors, she should see a doctor regularly.

Avoid vices.

Aside from being conscious about what you eat, you should also avoid smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol. Medical experts suggest that these habits can increase breast cancer risk, particularly in premenopausal women.

Get critical illness insurance coverage.

Many people are intimidated by cancer because they worry about the medical cost. Women avoid screening for breast cancer for fear they will not have enough money and also will no longer be able to work.  AXA Philippines’ Health Start and Health Max offer you and your family protection from life-threatening illnesses at an affordable price. The insurance plan covers critical illnesses, including cancer, stroke, and heart attack.

The Philippines is  one of the countries with the highest incidence of breast cancer in Asia. The country has been in the list for years because the disease continues to affect a lot of Filipinos, young and old, male and female.

“Breast cancer cannot be prevented but the risk can be lowered by changing our lifestyle. Despite this, it still affects a lot of people, young and old, male and female alike. Our best defense is still early detection. This is the goal of our Pink Ribbon Campaign - to promote breast cancer awareness and early detection,” said Dr. Melanie T. Cruz, secretary of the Philippine Breast Cancer Society.

Pink Ribbon for Breast Cancer is an annual event held in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The opening activity was held at the Event Center of SM City San Lazaro, and was spearheaded by the Philippine Breast Cancer Society (PBCS) and SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, supported by the Department of Health (DOH).

Attended by hundreds of women, advocates and volunteer doctors, this year’s Pink Ribbon for Breast Cancer focused on educational talks and sharing of experiences by breast cancer warriors. DOH cancer program head Dr. Clarito Cairo conducted a talk on the importance of breast cancer awareness, and at the same time taught women how to detect and be protected against the risk.

“Every year, the number of patients suffering from breast cancer continues to rise. This is why we hold the Pink Ribbon for Breast Cancer yearly, to continue educating women that early detection and early intervention is very important,” said SM Cares Program on Women & Breastfeeding Program Director Bernadette Velasco.

Celebrity Suzi Entrata-Abrera hosted the event, and inspirational talks from film director Bibeth Orteza and actress Melissa de Leon, well-known breast cancer survivors, were featured. Free clinical breast examination was also administered by volunteer health professionals.

Pink Ribbon for Breast Cancer was also held at the event center of SM City Telabastagan.

The Philippine Breast Cancer Society, founded in 2009, is a medical organization dedicated solely to the management of breast cancer. Its members are made up of doctors under different specialties who are kept up-to-date on breast cancer management through annual Breast Cancer Symposium.
SM Cares aimed at supporting the communities where its malls are present. Other SM Cares initiatives for women include institutionalizing breastfeeding stations across all SM Supermalls nationwide as part of its program to provide breastfeeding mothers the convenience and privacy in nourishing their babies. Last August, SM Cares Program on Women supported Breastfeeding Pinays and DOH in the annual celebration of “Hakab Na!” in observance of Breastfeeding Awareness Month.

With high blood pressure and heart disease as the leading causes of death globally, proper intake of vitamins and supplements such as potassium is the easiest and most convenient way to counter heart problems.

Here are things you can easily follow to steer clear from an unhealthy heart:

Move it.

No matter how much you weigh, sitting for long periods of time could shorten your lifespan. If you work at a desk, remember to take regular breaks to move around. Go for a quick stroll during your lunch break as taking a daily half-hour walk is even better for your physical and mental health.

Avoid processed food.

Processed food tends to be high in sodium, and low in potassium. On the other hand, homemade meals are usually lower in sodium and higher in potassium. To avoid serious heart problems, consider buying more fresh produce and making meals at home.

Take a potassium supplement.

Potassium, a mineral found in bananas, milk, and oranges, plays an important role in keeping us healthy. This mineral is crucial for everyone, and disrupting optimal body levels of it can be very dangerous. Increasing potassium through diet is recommended in adults with blood pressure above 120/80 who are otherwise healthy.

But for those who do not have much time to prepare healthy meals, a potassium supplement is available OTC to make it convenient to achieve the required daily dose.

Neutra K is a simpler, better, and easier way to meet a person’s potassium needs. The Philippines’ first potassium food supplement with no prescription needed, Neutra K is sourced from one of the world’s leading producers of natural ingredients. The potassium in Neutra K is non-acidic, has no artificial flavors and preservatives, and effectively promotes a more regulated acidity in the body to prevent the potential ill-effects of prolonged imbalance.

Taking Neutra K tablets twice a day – one during breakfast and another during dinner – makes it more convenient to stay healthy. Neutra K is available in 300 mg tablets, in boxes of 100 or 12, exclusively in Mercury Drugstore branches nationwide.

In 1982, Taiwanese immigrant and herbalist Tei-Fu Chen decided to try his hand at selling herb-based supplements. Faced with the challenges that being a poor immigrant entailed in the US in the 1980s, Chen persevered. He began preparing herbal mixtures, using the knowledge of herbs passed down in their family from one generation to the next to sell from his apartment in Utah. And that was how his company, Sunrider International, was born.

Now, Sunrider International is one of the largest manufacturers of health, wellness, beauty, and household products in the world, with offices in 20 countries including China, Taiwan, and Singapore, and a market presence that spans 42 countries.

Headquartered in Torrance , California in the U.S., Sunrider International employs a multi-level marketing strategy to deliver its products to customers, helping individuals stay healthy while providing opportunities for those who want to be a part of the companys global network of independent business owners (IBOs), those who sell their products directly to customers.

Nature at its core

What makes the company one of the most successful in the world is its catalogue of natural and environment-friendly products. Sunrider International specializes in herbal supplements that offer a wide range of benefits, ideal for individuals who want to achieve optimal health and wellness. The company also has a line of cleaning products made of natural ingredients for the home, providing a greener alternative for consumers who want to switch to chemical-free products that are not harmful to the environment.

Sunrider International sets itself apart from competitors through its unique way of creating formulas for its products. Being an herbalist and pharmacist himself, Dr. Chen utilized his expertise to develop a manufacturing process that allows the company to extract and concentrate beneficial nutrients while minimizing the negative effects of all the ingredients, so that every product is a nutrient-rich jewel.

Sunrider International believes in the Philosophy of Regeneration®, which is the guiding principle for the company when it comes to conceptualizing and creating food supplements. The philosophy, which draws inspiration from the wuxing or the Five Elements Theory of China, aims to promote harmony across all five systems of the body: Endocrine  Fire, Respiratory  Metal, Digestive  Earth, Circulatory  Water, and Defense  Wood.

Complimenting this philosophy is the companys Nourish + Cleanse = Balance approach to health, utilizing the proper combination of foods in order to sustain the body with the right nutrients and remove toxins and impurities. This is likened to the concept of Yin and Yang, where keeping the balance between the two results in optimal health.

Sunrider Internationals products are also completely environment friendly, using ingredients that are sourced ethically. The company owns and operates eight manufacturing facilities across the world, and each facility is outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment for the highest degree of quality control and sustainable operations. This is part of the companys commitment to preserving the balance of the ecosystem.

Business opportunities for Filipinos.

Nutrient-rich, all-natural, and environment-friendly: all these qualities make the companys products attractive not only to those who want to live healthier lives, but also to those who want to become part of the company as Independent Business Owners (IBOs)  and enjoy all the financial benefits that come with it.

Shortly after its birth, the company began its expansion by establishing a distributor network across the U.S., and then to other countries. It eventually set up a presence in the Philippines in 1997, with the goal of extending the benefits of providing high-quality herbal products to Filipinos and at the same time give them the capability to become financially independent.

Since then, the company has been helping countless Filipino IBOs by giving them a viable source of steady income, and it plans to continue growing its presence in the Philippines as it looks for more partners to join its network of successful IBOs who share the companys passion and commitment to promoting healthy living and equal business opportunities for all.

Sunrider Internationals award-winning health and beauty products are the foundation of its distribution business. By sharing the passion for these products, Filipino IBOs can earn from retail sales right from the start and maintain a stable flow of income through a supportive partnership with the company.

To ensure long-term business viability for IBOs, the company plans to launch more products in the Philippines within the next five years. In addition, the company also eyes the launch of new business programs for Filipinos beyond its product catalogue.

Sunrider International is currently looking for new IBOs to join its growing family of distributors in the Philippines. For those who would like to know more about its products or are interested in becoming an IBO, visit their Facebook page and website at Sunrider International.

If more people really thought about how much their digestive systems do for them every day, they might be more inclined to take better care of their digestive health.  Your digestive system has a huge job - it breaks down the foods that you eat in order to make nutrients and energy available to the body, and it is responsible for steering unwanted waste out of the body, too.  On top of that, your digestive tract is a key player in immunity – the cells lining your digestive tract help protect your body against bacterial and viral invaders that could make you sick.

And, your brain and your digestive tract are in constant communication with one another. An incredible amount of information travels between your gut and your brain – so much so, that the nervous system that resides in your digestive tract is often called the body’s “second brain”.   This system alerts the “first brain” if you’ve eaten something you shouldn’t have, and also keeps tabs on your hunger level and your mood.

And yet, many people abuse their digestive system – by filling it with highly processed foods, or eating too much, or eating too fast – and pay little attention to it until something goes wrong.

Key Components to Digestive Health

In the most general sense, what you eat and the way you live your life influences the health of your digestive system.  A nutrient-rich, balanced diet helps to nourish all of your body’s cells, including those in your digestive tract.  Fiber, fluids and regular exercise all help to keep you regular, and taking care of your “second brain” by keeping your stress levels in check can also help to promote digestive health.

Fiber and Fluids Support Digestive Health

Perhaps one of the most important dietary components for digestive health is adequate dietary fiber.

Most people think of fiber as the substance that helps to keep the digestive process moving.  And certain fibers do just that.  But not all fibers function exactly the same way, which is why we often talk about two types of fiber – insoluble and soluble fiber – both of which contribute to digestive health, but in different ways.

Insoluble fiber – sometimes called “roughage” - isn’t broken down by the body but it absorbs water, which adds bulk. This type of fiber - found in vegetables, bran and most whole grains

- helps to speed the passage of waste through your digestive system, which helps keep you regular.

Soluble fiber– found in foods like apples, oranges, oats, barley and beans – thickens and swells up when it comes in contact with liquid.  So, when you eat these foods, they swell up in the watery environment of your stomach and help to fill you up.  But another important feature of soluble fiber is that it functions as a prebiotic – which means that it encourages the growth of the good bacteria in your digestive tract.

Your digestive system houses tens of trillions of microorganisms - made up of thousands of species – taken together, this bacterial colony is sometimes called the “gut microbiome”.

These bacteria help your body extract nutrients from your food, they help with the production of certain vitamins, and they protect the health of the digestive tract by keeping out dangerous foreign invaders.  But this mini ecosystem residing in your gut appears to do even more – there is evidence that your gut microbiome may also influence your body weight, memory and mood, too.  So, it’s important to provide these bacteria with their preferred source of fuel – in the form of soluble fiber.

You can also introduce beneficial bacteria into your system directly – in the form of probiotics found in certain foods.  Fermented foods such as yogurt and kefir, pickles and sauerkraut, miso paste and olives are all-natural sources of beneficial bacteria.

Since soluble fibers dissolve in water – and insoluble fibers trap it – it should come as no surprise that adequate fluids are important in keeping your digestive system running smoothly. But you also need water to produce saliva and digestive juices, and to transport nutrients to your cells, so taking in adequate fluids every day is vitally important to your digestive health.

Exercise and Stress Reduction Support Digestive Health

Regular exercise also supports digestive health in a couple of ways.  As your muscles contract and your breath deepens during activity, the natural contractions of your intestinal muscles are stimulated, too, which helps to move food through your system.  Exercise is also a well-known stress reducer, so it can help reduce digestive upsets that can occur in response to negative emotions.

The connection between your brain and your “second brain” in your digestive tract is something you’ve probably experienced in the form of a “gut reaction”.  When stress or anxiety strikes, your brain sends a signal to your gut - and the next thing you know you’ve got a churning stomach.

The signals travel in the other direction, too – from gut to brain.  When something in your digestive system isn’t quite right, an alert is sent to your brain, often before you even notice anything is wrong.  Either way, this brain-gut connection suggests that keeping your digestive system in tip-top shape is vital to your sense of well-being.

The diet and lifestyle steps you take to keep yourself healthy are the same ones that promote digestive health, too. A diet that includes plenty of fiber from colorful fruits and vegetables and whole grains, adequate hydration, and regular exercise are all key factors.  And take time to enjoy your meals – you’ll be more relaxed, and less likely to overeat, too.
