Adventures of a Diva Princess

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students welcome a new school year differently. No more flurry of activity in the morning or a rush to make it on time to school, as classes from preschool to college shift to online.

That’s a big adjustment, for sure, but there are a few things that students and their parents can do that will make online classes a breeze. Here are some tips from Araneta City:

Gear up with the right tech

The quality of a student’s experience during online classes will depend on a lot of things, but one of the most important is the gadget that they have with them. Whether they want to use a laptop, a tablet, or a smartphone in the conduct of their classes, it’s good to have a reliable device that has a high-quality screen, great cameras, and a dependable speaker and mic combo. If the student in your life wants to deck out their setup, they can up the ante by investing in mechanical keyboards and a professional headset. Who said learning can’t be cool?

Digital Walker, I-Studio, and Xiaomi in Gateway Mall; AV Surfer in Ali Mall; and Gadget Worx in Farmers Plaza carry a wide array of gadgets that are great for online classes. So, whatever device a student needs, whatever their budget, they can find the tech that works for them at Araneta City.

Don’t forget the essentials

Having classes online doesn’t mean that students could get away with doing all of their school work on their devices. It’s essential to break out their pen and notebook to write down essential points in their lessons. According to a study published in Psychological Science, writing with pen and paper does wonder when it comes to retaining more information. So, don’t forget to pick up a reliable pen and notebook.

Araneta City is the perfect destination for school essentials, with a variety of shops like National Bookstore in Ali Mall and Farmers Plaza, and Fully Booked and Office Warehouse in Gateway Mall. Students will surely find things to get them ready for their online classes.

Spruce up the wardrobe

Getting in the right headspace for class, especially when you’re at home, can be a bit tricky. A simple way to get students in the mood for learning is by having them dress up as if they’re leaving home and heading for school. Wearing clothes that are presentable but comfy can really do wonders when it comes to getting amped for online classes.

Shop the latest looks at Rustan's Department Store, Mango, and Marks & Spencer in Gateway Mall, or Plains & Prints and Giordano in Ali Mall. Farmers Plaza also has Oxygen, Petrol, and Dickies USA, for those back-to-school OOTDs.

Complete the entire outfit by copping a few new kicks from Adidas and Royal Sporting House in Ali Mall, Nike, and Vans in Gateway Mall, or Rusty Lopez in Farmers Plaza.

Prepare a workspace

Having a dedicated place where students can have their online classes and work on their school requirements allows them to focus on their tasks. It’s best to place their workstation in a well-lit and ventilated area. You can also make this area more conducive to learning by placing a few plants on and around the work desk. Some studies have shown that plants can be helpful in improving the concentration and memory of people. This can be helpful especially for students who have difficulty getting stuff done with the distractions around them. It also serves as a visual respite after long hours glued to the computer.

Pick up some house plants and gardening supplies from the Farmers Garden in Araneta City and bring some life to your student’s workspace.

Take a break

Studying from home can be stressful in its own way, so encourage students to take periodic breaks and relax. One of the best ways to take a breather from school work is by grabbing a quick snack. Ordering delightful treats and having it delivered can be a great way to help a student escape the stress of school work.

Araneta City has a lot of great dining options that deliver. Take a pick from the long list of dining destinations and have your food delivered via the Araneta City Assist (through the Araneta City website or mobile app) or the Araneta Citi-zen Personal Shopper (through the myKuya mobile app) when online classes get a little too demanding.

For more information about Araneta City, promos and the latest offerings, like and follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

At one point (or maybe more than a hundred points) in your life, things will become just too much. Too many items on your to-do list. Too much pressure from your boss. Too much anxiety over things you have no control over. Too many people in the room with you. Too much anger over a situation. Too many things on your mind. When faced with too much, here are some things that you can do.

Talk to God.

Don’t make this your last option. You don’t have to say a “formal” prayer. Make your prayers as normal as breathing. The more you talk to God, the more natural it will feel to turn to Him when things get too overwhelming.

Breathe in, breathe out.

The act of physically taking a deep breath and releasing it after a few seconds can help your brain and your heart slow down. Do this a few times until you feel calm enough to think with a clear head.

Step out/away.

If you need to leave a roomful of people, do it. If you need to walk away from a person you’re talking to, do it. When you need to leave that to-do list and walk around for a few minutes, do it. When you’re ready to face whatever needs to be dealt with, go back.

Read, watch, or listen to something.

It sometimes helps to do something that is so far from your current, overwhelming task just so you can get your bearings back. Read a few chapters from a non-school or non-work book. Watch a few minutes of your current favorite show. Listen to soothing (or rocking!) music. The idea is to get your mind off things, if only for a while.

Sleep.

Yes, sometimes, you just need to fully rest.

This is an excerpt from Dawns: A Weekly Devotional for Self-Care and Spiritual Growth, co-authored by Isa Garcia, Janina Marie Rivera, and Ida Torres. Published by OMF Literature, Dawns is available at OMF Lit Bookshop and other leading bookstores nationwide. The book can also be ordered online through shop.omflit.com.

Staycation is a combination of the word “stay” and “vacation” is not a new concept. It is simply when one chooses to stay at their home country or check-in at a hotel, instead of going abroad for vacation. A staycation or holistay, as defined by Wikipedia, is also a period in which an individual participates in leisure activities within driving distance of his or her own home. Lately, the trend has been increasing as more numbers of people now find more peace by spending time at home and have some needed rest and relaxation. More than that, staycations also offer a lot of quiet and humble benefits.

Staycations save time

Living in the Philippines means having to battle at least 3 hours of travel going from home to work and vice versa. Just imagine how much worse the traffic can get when it is a drive going to the airport! More than that, long airline terminal queues also eat up a significant part of a traveler’s day. Add all the hassle of traffic, terminal queues, departure procedures, etc. One day could easily be wasted on preparation.

Staycations are good for the environment

Checking in at a hotel also means contributing less to your carbon footprint! You would not have to use airplanes which require a massive amount of carbon emissions. Staying in a hotel is less harmful to the environment and really just pampers you to the core.

Staycations give time for meditation

Our fast-paced lifestyle limits our time to meditate and value the importance of rest. Taking a break during a staycation allows you to spend your energy on your body and use it as a time for spiritual, emotional, and physical rest and healing.

Staycations can inspire

Having some down time also gives you a chance to explore more ideas. Quiet times away from chaos can generate fresh ideas and inspirations that can later be turned to productive projects.

Staycations save money

Staycations also save a huge amount of money. You need not worry about spending so much on food, budgeting travel expenses, and expensive air fares. All staycations really ask of you is to stay put and rest at your own terms.

Already convinced to hold your well-deserved, yet affordable R & R? Century Park Hotel (CPH) is here to make it happen! Located at the heart of Manila, CPH boasts facilities and rooms that are perfect for you to simply unwind and enjoy your time with your family. Currently, CPH has Summer Solstice Special Room Rate promo which starts at Php 3,500 (net) per room per night. Now reap the benefits of that staycation the quick, affordable, and easy way at your home away from home, Century Park Hotel!

You can’t love others if you don’t truly love yourself. This is something we've heard since we were little. But loving one's self doesn’t happen overnight.

Renowned psychoneurologist and happiness doctor Lia Bernardo enumerates five easy tips on how women can live a happier, unapologetic life.

Renowned psychoneurologist and happiness doctor Lia Bernardo says that self-love is a daily process of accepting yourself completely by living a genuine, unapologetic life. Here are some tips from Dr. Bernardo on how women can love themselves even more:

Break the cycle by starting within.

You can’t tell people how to act but you can control how you think or feel about situations. It is better to see the bright side or to let go. Don’t give anyone the power over you – this is what true empowerment is.

Know that you are beautiful.

See yourself as whole – complete. All you need to do is face the camera inwards and like who you are. For days when you need a confidence booster, check out SM's beauty section to get special deals on skincare and beauty bundles.

Be proactive.

If you are sad, always remember that everything, including happiness, is your choice. Discover what makes you happy and take steps to incorporate them in your daily routine. Happiness is more about the journey, not the destination.

Take care of yourself.

It is important to practice self-care in all aspects of your life -- physically, mentally, and emotionally. Indulge in self-care with the Women’s Special at SM this March and avail of beauty and wellness deals from select spas and salons.

Accept yourself.

Once you’ve learned to accept and acknowledge who you really, are, all that self-doubt goes out the window. Take the time to get to know your individuality because whatever you think, you believe. Whatever you believe becomes your behavior. Revisit your belief, so you can improve your life today.

Ladies, celebrate self-love this Women’s Month at SM! Get fabulous finds such as fashion, accessories, make-up and skin care up to 70% off during SM’s Women’s Wednesday Sale the entire month of March.

“With a little bit of self love, anyone can change their life. At SM, we want women to make themselves a priority by letting them indulge in various pampering activities so they can be the best version of themselves,” said SM Supermalls senior vice president Jonjon San Agustin.

ONE Championship returns with its first event of 2019 from Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia on 19 January. After more than a month since the promotion's last event, ONE: DESTINY OF CHAMPIONS, fans of the organization will be eager to see ONE return.

The ONE: ETERNAL GLORY card isn't packed with every household name on the roster, but there is still no shortage of stories fueling every match.

Aside from being hungry for martial arts action, here are five reasons to watch ONE: ETERNAL GLORY.

Joshua Pacio's Title Defense

Initially, Joshua "The Passion" Pacio was scheduled to defend his title against Hayato Suzuki in a rematch of their August 2017 clash at ONE: KINGS AND CONQUERORS. However, Suzuki suffered an injury. Japan's Yosuke Saruta stepped in to replace his injured countryman and is now the man receiving a title shot.

The 22-year-old Filipino already equaled the score with Yoshitaka Naito with a unanimous-decision win in September at ONE: CONQUEST OF HEROES. He was supposed to even the score against Suzuki in a rematch. Suzuki was the last man to defeat Pacio when the former made his ONE debut in August 2017.

Pacio cannot afford to look past Saruta however. The 31-year-old veteran has a wealth of experience and will likely be looking to catch the champion slipping. Saruta has had 26 professional matches, and he enjoyed a successful ONE Championship debut in December against Alex Silva. Saruta isn't a normal replacement opponent, and if the champion takes the challenger lightly, it could be a disaster for him.

Can Pacio maintain his focus and avoid the upset?

The Christian Lee-Edward Kelly Rematch

We're along for the ride as 20-year-old Christian "The Warrior" Lee continues his hardline education in the world of mixed martial arts. His next assignment takes place at ONE: ETERNAL GLORY when he takes on the "The Ferocious" Edward Kelly in a rematch of a bout that ended controversially in September at ONE: BEYOND THE HORIZON. Lee suplexed Kelly inadvertently causing a disqualification.

There are recurring themes for this match. Will Lee be able to control the match the way he did in the first meeting, and gain the finish to put a stamp on this short saga with Kelly, or will the Filipino rise to the occasion?

Both men face pressure to perform because of the success of those closely associated with them under the ONE banner.

Lee is the younger brother of ONE Women's Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee. Kelly belongs to Team Lakay where his training partners include Pacio, ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard "Landslide" Folayang, ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje Eustaquio and ONE Bantamweight World Champion Kevin "The Silencer" Belingon.

It's a lively time for Filipino martial arts, and Kelly wants to earn his piece of the success.

Battle of the Wushu Queens

Priscilla Hertati Lumban Goal was as active as anyone in ONE in 2018. She competed six times and put together a sterling 5-1 run during that stretch. Lumban Goal is back in the organization's first event to embark upon what she hopes is another fruitful year. The Indonesian National Wushu Champion faces another expert Wushu practitioner in Indian champion Puja Tomar.

The women's atomweight division could be headed for some transition if Lee moves up to strawweight permanently. That's a genuine possibility as she is set to challenge for the title in March at ONE: A NEW WRA. If that happens, a scramble to compete for the vacant title could well include the winner of this bout.

With integral positioning potentially at stake, Lumban Goal and Tomar may be set to put on a show.

Action-Packed Muay Thai Clash

Italy's Joseph "The Hurricane" Lasiri returns to compete against England's Jonathan Haggerty in a ONE Super Series Muay Thai match. Lasiri is one of the most accomplished Muay Thai competitors in the world. He's won world championships in multiple weight classes and he uses a style that is traditionally fan friendly.

He'll get a chance to test his exquisite striking against Haggerty in a bout that could feature a highlight-reel finish.

The Return of The Gracie Pupil

Stefer Rahardian, a student of the legendary Carlson Gracie, to match up against the Philippines' Robin "The Ilongo" Catalan. It's a strawweight battle that should have fans interested from the outset.

Rahardian has an elite-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu base from his time with Gracie, but he has expanded his game beyond just grappling. He's already won the ONE Indonesia Flyweight Tournament which was a mixed martial arts contest.

While his striking has improved, Rahardian will likely need to lean heavily on his Jiu-Jitsu to beat Catalan. The latter is a former Wushu and Muay Thai world champion who would love nothing better than to keep his bout with Rahardian standing.

Which man will win the battle of styles?

FILIPINOS value their families above all else. They will do whatever it takes to make sure their loved ones are well cared for, even if it means traveling to different countries and taking on challenging jobs to earn a living. Japan has long been a popular choice for OFWs because of the high pay and quality of life. As of 2017, Filipinos are the third largest group of foreign workers in Japan.

With Japan’s aging population, the country is looking to hire even more foreign workers. But aside from hiring caregivers, domestic helpers, and other common jobs you might see online, here are a few unique jobs that might catch your interest.

Tokoshu Seiso: The Lonely Death Cleaner

Many OFWs work as housekeepers and domestic helpers, but there is another kind of cleaner needed in Japan. With an aging population, Japan has an increasing number of kodokushi or “lonely deaths.” Thus, there is also a high demand for tokoshu seiso—people who are hired to clean up the deceased person’s belongings. It is not a simple task, knowing that the owner of the house has passed on, so the cleaner usually says a prayer for the deceased person before entering the place.

Watch this video to see a Pinoy tokoshu seiso in action.

It is also available in Youtube: http://bit.ly/BDOKabayanJAPAN

Ninjutsu: Part-time Ninja Trainers

Filipinos are known for their talents in singing and dancing, which is why a lot of entertainers get hired to work on theme parks and cruise ships. In Japan, some establishments are also looking for “ninja trainers” to help promote tourism and teach kids all about ninja etiquette. So if you’ve always dreamed of being a ninja and have a few stunts up your sleeve, then this job is for you.

Sakura: The Decoys

Also known as a “hospitality supporter,” the decoys are hired as fake guests in weddings, meetings, or other events. One company also offers fake lovers and funeral guests. Since Pinoys are naturally friendly and sociable, this is a good option to consider.

Narabiya: The Professional Queuer

Imagine you’re standing in line, waiting for your turn to get your driver’s license renewed, when you suddenly remember that you left the stove on at home. What do you do? Call someone to stand in line for you! In Japan, it’s totally possible. And if you’re willing to do this for a few hours, you could earn as much as JPY 15,000 (PHP 7,000).

Kensetsu Sagyo-in: Construction worker for the 2020 Olympics

Preparations for the upcoming Olympic games in Tokyo are in full swing! Huge stadiums and other structures are being built and Japan needs to hire more people to get them done on time. Whether you're a carpenter, engineer, or architect, you'll most likely find an opening to suit your skill set. Not only will you be able to work in Japan, you'll also be able to say that you're a part of this historical event.

If you're an OFW, you work hard to earn money, grow your savings, and prepare for your family’s future. No matter what the job entails, you're willing to make sacrifices and do the work to be able to send money for your loved ones.

While they find ways to earn for their families back home, BDO finds ways to safeguard their keep and provide innovative options to send this money to their loved ones.   With 5000+ Cash Agad partners, 4000+ BDO ATMs, and 1000+ branches nationwide; BDO makes it easy and convenient for beneficiaries to withdraw the remittances.

Being in love is the happiest feelings in the world, so they say. Meeting someone then falling in love feel like you are destined together and its fate why you meet each other in the right time. But being happily in love is not for everyone. Most of the time you meet someone and they break your heart into a million pieces and you start to wonder, "why me?"

The Love Compass

With Valentine Day fast approaching, love is all we can think of and many are busy preparing what to do on that special day. But what about the others suffering from heartbreak? We decided to ask Dr. Paolo Bellosillo who is known for advocating living a quality life to share his thoughts on how you can protect your heart from the greatest stressor in life, a heartbreak.

What are the qualities that a woman should look for in a guy?

A woman needs to look for someone whose God fearing because if a man fears God, he will be loyal, faithful, committed, responsible, and honest. These are traits that any woman should want for in a man. A man like this will never make you worry or fear that he will go astray.

What are the qualities that a man should look for in their future partners?

A man needs to look for a woman who is capable of being their partner in life, not just in the bedroom. They need to find someone with a humble heart and someone who prioritizes their relationship over their pride.

How can you have a relationship that is good for both parties?

A relationship that preserves the dignity of the other person is always a good indication. When there is mutual trust and mutual respect, when a relationship is rooted in prayer and kindness then reinforced by communication, you know that it is beneficial to both parties.

What are your 5 tips for a healthy, smooth sailing relationship?

1.  Pray together. When God is at the center of everything, everything will fall into place.
2.  Communicate. As they said, almost everything can be sorted through an open and honest communication.
3.  Be kind. If you can't be anything, if there is no more love, then at least be kind.
4.  Be open. The two of you are not the same person which means that you will not have the same beliefs, the same principles, and the same ideologies. In fact, chances are big that you will have different ones so be open to understanding how the other person works.
5.  Let go of fear. Most of the time, we react negatively because of fear.

Any tips to our readers for this upcoming Valentine’s Day?

Valentine's Day is primarily focused on the heart, on love but everyday should always take that into account as love is a journey and a decision which both souls builds on.  While the whole world celebrates it, do so in a manner where it focuses not on consumerism or material things because they fade. Be original: play a song, sing a song, cook with love for your shared favorite dish, go to the first place where it all began with your special someone, or go to church and why delay it, say I DO, tie the knot. Just make sure the other is ready and fits in the qualities and attributes of those listed above After All when you Look Through The Eyes Of Love You Should Be Bringing Out The Best Of Me/You, Here There and Everywhere.

Surely by now you've already noticed how this app How God Created has flooded your Facebook wall and whether you want to or not, you can't help but click on the site and check yours.

Since I've been waiting for my writing muse to come back, she's been like MIA since last night and I really need to finish my Nissan and Pico de Loro adventures, I decided, for fun, to check some famous person and check how they will fare when God created them. Seriously, the top 5 were so funny I made a blog post on this. It hits the nail on its head. Remember, this is just for fun.

See for yourself.

My greatest wish is to live in a 5 star hotel. Like Coco Chanel when she lived at The Ritz, or Marlene Dietrich in Hotel Lancaster. I love this idea of checking into one but never checking out. I'm not rich nor a celebrity. But if I can live in one, I will. I don't want those residence hotel type; I just want to own one suite at any 5 star hotel anywhere in the world. Wishful thinking, I know but there's just something about staying in a hotel that fascinates the Inner Rich in me.

And the following is the main culprit: The raised bed with its height almost to my hips, lots of pillows, soft duvet and linens, unlimited hot water, a human alarm clock with you asking someone to wake you up with a call, super cool temperature of the suite with a silent  air conditioner, shelves big enough for my things, toiletries, a-phone-call away room service, 24 hours TV because there's no electric bills to pay, someone to make your bed and get this - my favorite of them all - free breakfast buffet. But then an everyday breakfast  buffet is actually not good because there will come a time that all the dishes there will taste the same.

But for me breads will not have that diminishing taste factor. I love breads. And the boulangerie section is always my first stop every morning. I have stayed in several hotels in 5 countries and almost all the major cities in ten regions in the Philippines and sadly there's only a few of them where I've tasted the best breads ever. It's more than five but I'm naming only the top  five that is memorable to my tatste.

THE BREADS OF BAGUIO COUNTRY CLUB

Yes they also serve their famous raisin bread but almost everything in their bread section is delicious. And topping it with Baguio's strawberry jam and butter is the best
Photos by findgoodbaguiofoods.com

THE WHITE SLICED BREAD OF DAYS' HOTEL ILO-ILO

They look so simple and just a normal sliced breads from a glance but this is the best sliced bread I've tasted. They told me they just bought it from the bakery up front but when i bought a loaf, it doesn't taste the same at all. I wonder why.

THE BOULANGERIE OF SPIRAL AT SOFITEL

I think I've died and gone to Bread heaven when I saw this bread section at Spiral. Wow just wow. I'm speechless when face with this bread scene.

THE SWEET BREAD OF ASTORIA PLAZA CAFE ASTORIA

When my best friend's fiancee came here in Manila from Belgium, he treated us to a three day staycation at Astoria Plaza. Their breakfast buffet is not that impressive but what stuck in my memory is this sweet bread that is so fluffy inside but crunchy on the outside with a liberal sprinkling of powdered sugar. I thought it was a  donut sans the hole but i was  told it was just sweet bread.

THE BREAD BUFFET TABLE AT SIGIRIYA VILLAGE (SRI LANKA)

I actually sampled all the breads on this table. And that's how addicted I was to bread. Most are crunchy but the inside is so soft and tasty. And I enjoyed munching/eating each bread. I was kind of choosing the bread buffet at Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo but in actuality most of them are just muffins and donuts and the bread is not really that appetizing for me. It was just a plain bread.

Who Am I?

I’m Cie. An ex-Banker turned Blogger. An unshakable optimist, I gave up the security of a 9 to 5 job to look for that undefinable something that has made me restless over the years. And now armed with nothing more than a passion and a dream, I’m slowly discovering more about life surrounded by people in events and in places I’ve only read about.

The Diva Princess is also a Bibliophile, Anglophile, Lover of all things British and Korean, Sucker for British accent, Fangirl of Korean Dramas and idols, Liverpool, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafa Nadal and Britney Spears. A Harry Potter Fanatic.

On Press Release

For blog posts with "Press Release" on the subject, those are not my original writing but a press kit sent to me by partner companies. When content falls under "Press Release," this means that the material is fully and directly from the company issuing the press release. This also means that the blogger is not the author of the statement being read. This blog is simply providing the information for readers who may be interested
