MTECH 2015: MERALCO Visioneering Technological Innovation for Better Customer Service

Imagine a near distant future where you live in a fully automated home and everything is just connected with your mobile. It's not even a near distant future, as Meralco pushes for technological innovation or innovative solutions in the power industry for better customer service. So itmight happen next week or next month.

On June 26, 2015 Meralco launched the first Meralco Technology and Innovation Summit otherwise known as  MTECH2015.This is a three day summit culminating in a forum on Disruptive Technologies.

What is disruptive innovation/technology you might ask.
  1. disruptive innovation is an innovation that helps create a new market and value network, and eventually disrupts an existing market and value network (over a few years or decades), displacing an earlier technology.
The summit featured innovations that will change the power industry. It is a "visioneering", focusing on the creation of a future that opens new opportunities for innovative solutions to increase consumer interaction, build consumer empowerment, improve energy efficiency, integrate renewable and distributed resources, expand opportunities for electric transformation while ensuring affordable sustainable and reliable energy.

Meralco Chairman Manuel V.  Pangilinan, MVP himself, gave the welcoming remarks. afterwards followed a series of talk, rivaling that of Facebook or Apple conference, as multi-media highlighted the presentation given by Meralco Chief Technology Adviser Gavin Barfield, Meralco President and CEO Oscar S. Reyes, Meralco SVP and Head Customer Retail Services  Corporate Communications Alfredo S. Panlilio.

Mr. Gavin Barfield said in his talk that "Vision necessitates transformation. And technology will play an integral part in enabling this transformation". He further reiterated that "Meralco has put new technologies into its system and that more is to be done. In the coming years, Meralco will definitely employ disruptive technologies to achieve the vision that we have dared to imagine now".

The summit was very well attended by Meralco stakeholders as well as media, bloggers and its employees. 

Executives from globally-renowned tech firms also flew in to the country and talk about revolutionary technologies challenging traditional business models.  IBM's Scalable Solutions Architect and Master Inventor and Fellow Kerrie L. Holley gave a fascinating lengthy talk on "Rethink Disruption" which focuses on the use of Disruptive Technologies to spark progress in the country and uplift the lives of Filipinos.

In the afternoon session, IBM Analytics Chief Data Scientist Dr. Olav Laudy and Del's South Asia Head of Big Data and Cloud Practice talked about the future of utility companies via utilization of big data, analytics and cloud. Anand Gopal Menon, Siemens ASEAN Chief Technology Officer and Engineering Head as well as Opower APAC Managing Director Sajin Rehan gave talk on smart technologies and customer applications.

The three day event, from June 24 - 26, 2015 features New Technologies and Innovation Exhibit at the lobby of Meralco Lopez Building. Technology brands such as Cisco, Citrix, Cloudera, Dell, Indra, Landis +Gyr, Microsoft, GMS, Hitachi, Huawei, IBM, Pay Maya, safezone, Salesforce, samsung Business, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Toshiba, Eisenpatt Solutions, SAP, and OPOWER have showcased their latest products and services.
