Delicious Destination: Salliano's Restaurant and Bar

"The saddest thing in the world is never having the chance to taste delicious food."
Midnight Diner (Korean Drama)

The most I can remember, the best food I have tasted has always been the one cooked by my father. He was a pretty good cook and there are moments that I miss some of his dishes. Some dish like the Ginataang Alimasag with Sitao and Kalabasa, a dish that every time I see has that special taste I remember.

Last week we were invited to try a new restaurant in the heart of Marikina. It’s my second time to be in Marikina, and as always I’m struck with this feeling of being stranded in time. That feeling of nostalgia despite being surrounded by malls, tall buildings, modern transportation, etc.  Or maybe I’m just the one feeling it.

Sallianos Restaurant and Bar kind of looks intimidating at first, with its biggest spoon and fork you can see, it has that look of a “sosyal”, fine dining place. But once you enter you will immediately feel the welcoming warmth.

Foods from your childhood or the comfort of home cooked meals can’t be found at your mother’s kitchen anymore. Those family favorites have found its home at Salliano’s Restaurant and Bar.

Run by a group of childhood friends; Essex Polintan, Sweetie Polintan, Eva Claravall, Eugene Claravall and Marlon Matias;  Salliano’s, (they don’t have a particular meaning, they just love that name) offers foods from your childhood or the comfort of home cooked meals.

“Nostalgic home cooked dishes which brings back memories with just a sniff or taste”, says Mr. Essex Polintan is what Salliano’s aims to offer. They want to serve food that will most remind you of home. That’s why most of the items in the menu come from old recipes that have been perfected over time.

Serving something from memories can be hard but Salliano’s manages to replicate the home cooked flavor in almost all of their dishes. And we have the chance to try all their bestseller.

We were served first with Country Fried Chicken, a half dozen of assorted Chicken wings and legs served in a bucket. It is tasty and crunchy. Just as I like it. The tender bite is enough to bring you down memory lane. I don’t know about you but every time a fried chicken is served I feel happy.

The Three Cheese Artichoke Dip served with Toasted Baguette can whet your appetite for more. The combination of three cheese makes the dip so perfect for any toasted bread and goes well with the Country Fried Chicken when  I dipped it.

The Classic Fish and Chips has large servings. It is so crispy on the outside but the fish is so tender.

But I want rice especially as they began serving the BBQ Pork and Beef Ribs, Osso Bucco, Callos, Meatballs Ala Salliano, Salliano’s Paella and the Pugon Fired Salliano’s Crackling.

I almost overlook the Truffle Carbonara and the Pasta de Mariscos. But the serving is too tempting, I need to try it.  Both the pasta dishes are so good and filling. The pasta noodles are chewy and the Pasta de Mariscos has so many toppings of shrimp and shells.  But the Osso Buco and the Pugon Fired Salliano's Crackling is calling with the rice.

Callos is a dish that has been served for centuries from around the world. Salliano's Callos, is one of the best Callos I've tasted so far. It reminds me of the Callos made by my father's sister. I used to polish off the sauce with bread, thankfully there's no bread around as we still have lots of dishes to sample.

Another Spanish dish that is a must try in Salliano is their Paella Salliano. I don't eat Paella that much but once I've tasted this savory dish it's surprisingly good. The explosion of flavors in this dish is one you must experience.

Biting into the very tender beef of the Osso Bucco, you’d immediately taste its sweet flavor that mostly comes from the sauce and mainly from being cook for a long period of time. It tastes so heavenly.

The BBQ Pork and Beef Ribs served with Spanish rice are so flavorful and tender. The hickory flavor blends well with the tender meat and the meat from the ribs easily separates from the bones.

The Meatball ala Salliano is the star of the menu. I am delighted to find how big it is. With its subtle flavorings, it has so many flavors at once as I bite into it. It is very highly commendable on your first visit here.

We all oohed and ahhed as they serve the Pugon Fired Salliano Crackling. Its crispy crackling is enough to make you swoon as you bite into it. The meat is so tasty you won’t even need sauce for it. Just be careful when you eat this, health-wise,  because, they serve a kilo of this for every order and you won’t stop eating once you have a taste of this.

All the dishes in the menu are, I repeat, highly commendable and everything goes well when washed down with their refreshing drinks. They also have the best tasting coffee blends of Caramel and Mocha Frap.

But the best is still to come. Dessert! And Salliano’s has the best to offer in this side of the earth.

Never mind that we have our fill with all those delicious dishes. But dessert is another matter. Having a separate belly for dessert, I gladly wait for the Castarones de Salliano.

Garnished with Whipped Cream, the best part of this gooey dessert is that it reminds you of leche flan and macarons but its more yummy than that combined. Thisis  more fun shared with others but really I want to keep this dessert for myself.

Sallino’s Restaurant and Bar, with its old manor look can seat around 60 to 180 persons. They have a large lounge area and there is a place reserved for band or music playing. They formally opened last September 19, 2015 with Up Dharma Down as their first band. They promise to guest more to serenade diners.

But wait, there's more. Kids to dine for free on weekends between 11am to 2pm. Isn't that great?

So what are you waiting for? Head over there for that sumptuous meal.

Salliano's Restaurant and Bar is located near Blue Wave Mall in Marikina.
