Filipino
fans are the most rabid basketball fans in the world. They are not only a fan,
they also play the game, that is why in every corner of the
streets you’ll see hoops and baskets and people playing even in the middle of
the day.
I always
believe that this passion for basketball is one of the reasons why there is
less incidence of drug addiction in the country. Basketball do not only bring
people together they can also improve life skills especially if you let your
kids start playing them early.
This is
what Alaska Milk Corporation hopes to bring by using basketball as a medium to encourage
and influence today’s Filipino youth. Basketball can offer ability and
confidence to a young basketball athlete.
Alaska
Milk’s NUTRITION.ACTION.CHAMPION program and their promotion of proper
nutrition and active lifestyle thru the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA youth basketball
program continues it effective platform and also help address the issue of
overweight and malnourished children in the country.
Last
January 23 at Don Bosco Technical School, the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Philippines 2016
presented by Alaska tipped off its ninth year of global youth basketball
participation program. It teaches boys and girls fundamental skills as the core
values of basketball at the grassroots level to help grow and improve youth
basketball experience for players, coaches and parents.

According
to NBA Philippines Managing Director Carlo Singson, “The Jr. NBA Philippines is
the longest running youth basketball program outside the United States.”
More than
36,000 players and 2700 coaches have participated in this Program since 2007
producing the likes of Kiefer Ravena and Rendell Sening among others.
This
season which starts from January 23 to April 24, will comprise of four stages:
- · The Skills Clinic in school and communities.
- · Regional Selection Camps where selected players will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in the tryouts.
- · The National Training Camp in Manila on April 22 to 24, where an NBA and WNBA player or legend will be in attendance to help train and inspire the finalist, and;
- · NBA Experience Trip for the ten Jr. NBA and five Jr. WNBA All Stars to China to watch the NBA Global Games in Shenzhen featuring Charlotte Hornets and the LA Clippers.
In
addition to this, there will also have a search for the 2016 Jr. NBA Coach of
the Year. Ten Jr. NBA and four Jr WNBA coaches will be selected in the Ntional
training Camp to be led by Jr. NBA Head Coaches Craig Brown, Chris Sumner and
Alaska Power Camp Coach Jeff Cariaso.
The Jr.
NBA/Jr. WNBA program is free and open to boys and girls ages ten to fourteen.
