Adventures of a Diva Princess

Pru Life UK bagged the International Life Insurer of the Year-Philippines recognition in the Insurance Asia Awards for the second consecutive year. The company’s innovations, new products and partnerships, including its community investment initiatives were recognized by the organization as it stood out among its peers who were nominated in the same category in the Philippines.

Insurance Asia Awards is a prestigious awards program that recognizes the most outstanding insurance companies in Asia for their remarkable innovations.

“We are truly grateful and inspired by this honor from the Insurance Asia Awards. I attribute this recognition to our employees, agency workforce and other distribution partners who tirelessly work and innovate to fulfill our purpose of helping many more Filipinos get the most out of life,” said Pru Life UK President and Chief Executive Officer Eng Teng Wong.

The award is another milestone for Pru Life UK as it leads the life insurance industry in terms of New Business Annual Premium Equivalent based on the Insurance Commission’s official ranking in 2020 and 2021.

Over the past year, the Company strengthened its efforts to promote financial inclusion through providing simple, accessible, and affordable life and health insurance products on its pioneering AI-powered app, Pulse. It also offered free COVID-19 protection with vaccine side effects coverage in the health and wealth management app Pulse in 2021.

Pru Life UK also formed strategic partnerships to expand its reach and offer insurance protection to more Filipinos in the country. With the customers’ safety and convenience in mind, the Company renewed its partnership with Robinsons Bank and partnered with CIMB Bank to develop more innovative digital financial products and services, which are even more essential amid the pandemic. It also expanded its sales agency offices in Metro Manila, and several provinces in the country.

Outside the country, a notable partnership with Prudential Cambodia allowed more than 7,000 Filipinos in Cambodia and their families to have access to PRUMySafety, a digital protection product covering customers against the risk of road accidents which is available on Pulse.

“We are further motivated to drive up financial inclusion even more across the Philippines, including Overseas Filipino Workers. As one Pru Life UK family with all our distribution partners, we continue to expand our reach and protect more lives, especially the underserved and unserved Filipinos,” said Wong.

This year, the Company has onboarded on popular ecommerce platforms GCash and Shopee and made more bite-sized protection products available on Pulse.

It also opened PRUHouse, its agile and dynamic workplace in Ortigas early in the year, to create adaptable workspaces fit to the different workstyles of its growing sales force.

Filipinos have always had a tenuous relationship with health. The biggest reason for this is, simply put, poverty - many Filipinos do not want to burden their loved ones with the financial stress of dealing with health concerns, or they need to prioritize other things, such as basic necessities. Unfortunately, this means many ignore symptoms of illness, which may lead to serious complications down the road.

In 2021, 23.7% or 26.1 million Filipinos were reported to be poor, and this was primarily due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many were caught financially unprepared for lockdowns, or worse, their loved ones catching the virus and needing treatment. Filipinos could no longer ignore even the mildest symptoms out of fear that it may be COVID-19. Health and financial security became the biggest concern, and that led Filipinos to one of the things they used to overlook - insurance.

The Philippines saw an increase in people availing or renewing their insurance premiums during the pandemic. The Insurance Commission (IC) reported a 5.9% growth in total premiums, and this was because Filipinos were becoming more self-conscious about their health and being prepared for the future.

“It is very important to have one, especially at this time. You’ll never know when your health is at risk,” said one insurance user. “I've personally experienced borrowing money from friends because one of my family members got hospitalized and our savings was not enough.”

Many Filipinos are registered to PhilHealth. In fact, the organization reported in 2020 that it had nearly 95 million Filipinos covered by its insurance policies, whether as members or dependents. Unfortunately, that still leaves 15.2 million Filipinos without coverage, and even those who do, admit that they only have PhilHealth because it is an employment benefit.

Still, there is great hope for Filipinos on the horizon. As Filipinos, especially the Gen Z-ers who are joining the workforce, start moving towards securing their future and that of their families, many are looking for an insurance provider that suits their needs, offers products that suit their budget and lifestyle, and are just as committed to protecting what matters most.

Allianz PNB Life is currently the Philippines’ fastest-growing insurance company. Since 2019, Allianz has been recognized as the number one insurance brand in the world, and for good reason. As a leading insurance provider, all of Allianz PNB Life’s products and services are designed to meet the lifetime financial planning, wealth accumulation, and well-being aspirations of every Filipino family.

Not only that, but Allianz PNB Life is also heavily involved in advocacies that greatly impact the society. Allianz scored 92 points out of 100 in the 2021 Dow Jones Sustainability Index due to its efforts in addressing climate change, and are consistently included in Bloomberg’s Gender Equality Index because of its policies on social inclusion in the office space.

Its sustainability campaigns, RideSafe and No Filter, stressed the importance of protecting the environment through lifestyle changes, and its most recent endeavor, Kickoff!, was launched to give young, amateur Filipino football and futsal players a platform to show their skills. Allianz PNB Life has also partnered with SOS Children’s Villages in helping the victims of Typhoon Odette rebuild their homes.

All these activities, kicked off within the last year alone, prove Allianz PNB Life’s commitment to bettering the lives of countless Filipinos.

“Our mission at Allianz PNB Life is ‘Secure the future’. This is the idea behind every single decision we make,” said Allianz PNB Life President and CEO Alexander Grenz. “Everything we have done so far - our sustainability campaigns like RideSafe, partnering with SOS to help Typhoon Odette victims, and even products we have in the works – these were all done with the intention of giving Filipinos confidence in their tomorrows…that their lives, and their futures, are secured by the things Allianz PNB Life efforts.”

This also trickles into the products and services the insurance company offers. Through products such as Allianz eAZy Health, a 5-year renewable term insurance solution that provides life insurance coverage with protection against critical illness, accident, and disability, as well as up-and-coming plans like Allianz Protect, Allianz PNB Life continues looking for ways to make sure any Filipino, regardless of age, income, or lifestyle, is able to insure themselves.

“We truly believe that every Filipino has a right to a secure future. This is why we create products and services that Filipinos will benefit from, and we also step out of our industry to contribute to advocacies that will bring about a positive impact on society,” Grenz shared. “We know that Filipinos need an insurance partner that looks out for them, their interests, and the world they live in, and I think we fit the bill. In the quest to find the right partner in securing their lives, we hope they will consider and choose Allianz PNB Life.”

Allianz PNB Life is seeking to help address the protection gap in the Philippines by partnering with reach52, an award-winning social enterprise that has made healthcare more accessible to rural communities.

“The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has made all of us vulnerable to critical illness and financial instability. Through our partnership with reach52, we are hoping to arm Filipinos with the knowledge and protection to better prepare for unexpected crises,” said Allianz PNB Life President and CEO Alexander Grenz.

In June, the Insurance Commission (IC) released the results of an industry survey designed to assess the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and determine how the insurance industry responded to claims. The classification of the claims included medical benefits, death benefits or other benefits, such as travel inconvenience, travel cancellations and delays, and cash assistance, among others.

The IC survey revealed that the total Covid-19 related claims paid by the industry amounted to P326.95 million, with medical benefits comprising the bulk of the amount at P258.8 million.

“The insurance industry has been responsive in providing the benefits under these claims. However, reported claims are still low considering the number of identified COVID-19 positive cases in the country,” Grenz said, adding that, “If this pandemic has taught us anything, it's that securing one's health has to be one of the most important things to do for us and for our families.”

According to the IC, insurance penetration remains low in the country at only 1.69 percent as of September 2019.

“Fifty-two percent of the world’s population still don’t have access to healthcare, and reach52 has been constantly working in finding solutions to help address this. In the Philippines, we are glad to have found a partner in Allianz. With our companies’ combined expertise, we are confident we can achieve a lot to help close the protection gap in the country,” said reach52 Founder and CEO Edward Booty.

Currently, reach52 operates its on-the-ground services for over 500 communities in the Philippines, Cambodia, and India, with further countries in the pipeline, and have partnerships with over 20 leading global and regional organizations.

They deliver screening, health worker training, and affordable medicines, insurance, diagnostics, and consumer health products in rural regions that existing services don’t reach. This is achieved through establishing health systems and services in these underserved areas, powered by their mobile apps and tech platforms, community-based workforce, and partnerships with the public and private sector.

Early on, Allianz is already looking into expanding its portfolio to include more microinsurance products.

“This pandemic has shown us the importance of having good physical and financial health. With the work we are doing with reach52, we are hoping to help Filipinos achieve both,” Grenz added.

Allianz and reach52 will be holding an online media press conference, where both companies are expected to announce the beginning of this major undertaking.

Less than 20% of Filipinos have availed of insurance products with majority still viewing it as an expense rather than an emergency fund.  Sadly, lower income Filipinos are not even aware of them.  This is despite the insurance industry being around for more than 100 years already.

MAPFRE INSULAR and EON share the vision of bringing financial services closer to more Filipinos. As one of the top ten non-life insurance companies in the Philippines, MAPFRE INSULAR recognizes that it’s thousand-strong agent force will never be enough to reach the untapped market.  Digital is the best and fastest means to get Filipinos insured.  It is the way of the future.

On the other hand, EON, since its inception two years ago, has always tracked the digital path.  Early this year, it has shifted gears and is on its way to becoming the preferred bank of the broader mass market.  It now offers a suite of deposits, loans, and payment products through its online market place for financial transactions.  EON believes that even non-life insurance, like any other financial transaction, can be commoditized and sold digitally through its digital financial market place.

With the combination of EON’s digital strength and MAPFRE’s credibility, Filipinos are set to benefit from this partnership.  “In MAPFRE, we have made initial strides towards going digital by enabling our website to accept applications for some of our insurance products.  We believe that this partnership with EON will amplify our efforts in bringing our products into the hands of our customers,” explained Tirso Abad, President & CEO of MAPFRE Insular.

Currently, customers who want to purchase selected insurance products from MAPFRE Insular’s website are required to pay via credit card.  This hinders non-credit card holders to avail and benefit from the online service.

On the other hand, EON’s open banking capability enables even non-EON accountholders to avail of services in their website and app.  “Customers can transact in our website or app using any Visa or Mastercard debit or prepaid card.  Offering vouchers in our digital financial market place allows more people to avail of MAPFRE’s online insurance products as vouchers are accepted forms of payment in MAPFRE’s website”, added Paolo Baltao, EON Banking Group Head.

Currently, customers may already purchase MAPFRE’s Compulsory Third Party Liability (CTPL) Insurance vouchers from EON’s website up and EON Bank PH app.  Soon, EON will also be offering Travel Insurance, as well as Personal Accident Insurance from MAPFRE.

In disaster-prone countries such as the Philippines, you can never be too prepared for unforeseen circumstances. With every unexpected thing that can really set you back, having non-life insurance is your best solution to rebuild assets that are accidentally destroyed or affected by natural disasters.

Having your own insurance policy is important. However, finding the right one for you can be a struggle. To help you, here are a few things you need to know before getting non-life insurance in the Philippines:

What is General Insurance?

General Insurance or Non-life Insurance helps individuals like you to protect yourself and the things you value such as your home, car, and other valuables, from risks such as fire, flood, storm, earthquake, and other natural disasters and accidents.

Why is it important to have non-life insurance?

The Philippines is a disaster-prone country and however small the risk may be of all these things happening to you, the impact on your finances, your lifestyle, and your future can become unmanageable if you don’t have insurance. Whether you are just a careful planner or a constant worrier, purchasing an insurance policy for the things you value most gives you peace of mind.

What is Risk Assessment and why is it important?

Your assets’ insurability is based on several factors that comprise how much “risk” you pose to the company. Risk Assessment is important because it allows assessors to know how likely you will be involved in an accident or how risky your location is when it comes to natural disasters. Things such as where you live, where you drive, the risks you face in your way of living, and susceptibility to natural disasters, among others, are taken into consideration when determining your rate.

How much should I shell out for my insurance policy?

The amount you are going to pay for, also known as insurance premium, is very affordable in the Philippines. For example, the average cost of a car insurance policy ranges from Php 15,000 to Php 20,000, and that amount is relatively small compared to the protection and security you are getting in return. Instead of seeing it as an added expense, it is important to understand that you are not just buying insurance for your assets, but, you are buying peace of mind knowing that you can cover the unexpected expenses when you encounter an accident because your insurance can help you with it.

How can I determine if this is the right policy for me?

Not all insurances are equal. In determining the best one for you, do not say yes to the first insurance company that will approach you, or else, you may find yourself disappointed with the possibility of getting limited coverage and subpar quality of service. Instead, weigh in other options and see if the company will give you the best and the most reliable service that you want.

Are there non-life insurance providers in the Philippines?

There are a lot of non-life insurance companies in the Philippines, one of which is Mercantile Insurance—one of the country’s pioneers in providing non-life insurance with decades of long-term stability and responsible growth in the industry. Serving Filipinos since 1962, Mercantile Insurance is a credible and reliable partner that delivers superior insurance services. The company has been a long-standing partner of companies such as BDO Insurance Brokers, Penta Insurance Broker Services Inc., Benpres Insurance Agency Inc., and Lacson & Lacson Insurance Brokers Inc., among others including direct individual clients.

Aside from my house and my car, what other valuables can I insure?

Apart from your hard-earned assets, you can also insure something as important as your business and other tools of the trade. General Insurance companies like Mercantile Insurance have a full range of non-life insurance products and offerings, including Fire and Allied Perils, Engineering Insurance, Miscellaneous Casualty, Marine Cargo, Inland Marine, Marine Hull, Aviation, Personal Accident, Travel Insurance and all kinds of Bonds. Being a trusted name in the industry, Mercantile is known to provide quality insurance solutions like no other that are designed to suit your current and future needs at competitive prices.

Don’t turn a blind eye on the importance of non-life insurance. It’s the protection you, your assets, and your family needs. A small amount can go a long way, especially when faced with unforeseen incidents. You can visit http://www.mic.com.ph and work with the perfect insurer that can provide your needs even on a budget. Or, if you already have an existing insurance agent or broker, make sure to tell him to get your non-life insurance policy from Mercantile Insurance so you will always have peace of mind when the unexpected arises.
