Adventures of a Diva Princess

Since it began the United Kingdom monarchy has been rifed with intrigues and scandals too juicy for the commoners . But underneath the crown and regal vestments, members of royalty are still very much human as revealed by the  politics and lifestyle of the United Kingdom’s most esteemed family.

Time and again, these rulers and their family often become the subject of controversy. History remembers many past monarchs behaving badly, like King Henry VIII challenging the Pope in the 16th century so he can annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, or the witch hunts organized by King James VI of Scotland before ascending the English throne at the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603. Fortunately, not all royal squabbles are terrible. Most are just juicy fodder, the kind we ordinary individuals can’t help but feel fascinated about.

There’s no doubt that sovereigns carry a certain charm, thanks to the position, power and fame they possess. Still, the things that make them human—their love lives, their petty jealousies, and their secret obsessions—make them perfect in the eyes of their admirers.

Here we list down a few royal scandals in recent history that left watchers shocked and intrigued the world over:

Rekindling Old Passions

At the top of the list are the extra-marital affairs of former royal couple Prince Charles and Princess Diana. In 1986, Charles resumed his former relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, now the Prince’s second wife. Diana was aware of the affair and took matters in her own hands by confronting Camilla at a birthday party in 1989.

String of Affairs

Diana, too, had been romantically linked to several men during her marriage with Charles, like with ex-army captain James Hewitt, car salesman James Gilbey, and her former bodyguard Barry Mannakee. The first of this short list was even forced to deny rumors of being Prince Harry’s biological father.

Caught Naked

The second son of Charles and Diana has had his fair share of shocking reveals during his rebellious days, including being caught using cannabis and getting into a brawl with paparazzi. Perhaps Prince Harry’s most jaw-dropping scandal involved him going naked over a game of strip billiards in a Las Vegas hotel. Leaked photos soon circulated on the Internet and the red-head royal was forced to rush back to England to explain himself not only to his dad but also the Queen.

Anything for Love

Formerly the Prince of Greece and Denmark, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband Prince Philip had to endure much controversy when the two got engaged in 1947. At the time, he was dismissed as a “German” by the British and was considered “not good enough” by the king’s advisers. Perhaps his poor image wasn’t unfounded: Not only was he penniless and a foreigner, his sisters also married German princes who had Nazi ties. To improve his image, he abandoned all his royal titles, taking on the style of Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten using the surname of his mother’s British family. He also converted to Anglicanism.

Many more scandals have plagued royal families along with the nobility throughout the centuries. For more shocking revelations, catch Reign every Tuesday at 9PM on RTL CBS Entertainment.

From Pia Wurtzbach and Monique Lhuillier to 4th Impact, Filipinos have raised the national flag high and proud wherever they are in the world. Filipinos abroad are known for their talent and hard work, and many serve as living proof that anything can be attained through sheer determination. Such is the inspiration brought by Xenos and Claire Soto—two of many other Filipinos who’ve raised homegrown values in a foreign land to achieve success not just for themselves, but also for others.

The husband and wife moved to Singapore in 2008 during the global recession. During these trying times, challenges came to their lives as soon as they moved. Equipped with high hopes and dreams, the couple went ahead and did what they felt was necessary to make things work.

“There were lots of soul-searching and tears. You learn to swallow your pride, knowing that you do not know everything, and that being away from home you start from nothing,” Claire said. “It just takes a lot of work and time getting used to the different culture, and finding the best way to move your head around it to survive.”

Life soon got better for the couple. Both managed to get good jobs in their respective professions; Xenos as an engineer and Claire as an architect. Stress from work would always come their way, but they learned to cope by staying active. Claire was into running, cardio workouts, and yoga, while Xenos was into ball games, marathons, and martial arts. It was their enthusiasm for fitness that led them to the Spartan Race. Seeing it on TV, Xenos thought the race looked fun, so he signed up hoping to conquer the obstacles himself.

Being physically active made it easy for Xenos to prepare for the race. Throughout his training, Claire joined him not only inside the gym, but also in following a healthy diet. Eventually, the workouts motivated Claire to sign up for a Spartan Race three weeks prior the event. “My wife and I were both hyped and excited after the November 2015 Sprint that we decided to register again for the Spartan Super,” Xenos said.

During Spartan Race training sessions, Xenos and Claire formed a group with like-minded Filipinos who shared the same interests in fitness. The group gradually grew to over 30 members, now calling itself TeamBato. Meaning 'rock’ in Filipino, “bato” stood as a metaphor for toughness and endurance—a good representation of the Filipino spirit as well as the team’s enthusiasm for pushing past their limits.

It was by training with the team that the couple discovered a new role in keeping the fervor alive among the members: “When we got into the Spartan lifestyle, we had something better to look forward to every Sunday, the Spartan community workout day,” Claire said.

Xenos too began to take his passion to new heights as he worked towards becoming the first Filipino certified Spartan Race trainer. Together with his wife, he would push himself further to inspire his teammates, reminding TeamBato that hard work always pays off, and humility will take them farther.
“During training, I see people around me disappointed when they were unable to do particular obstacles. I learned to become a teacher, a motivator, and became more patient in helping people,” Xenos said. “I share all the techniques I know, and ask them to take their time and not rush. In time, it’s a bigger fulfillment for me when they can already do the obstacles.”

Similar to the couple’s Spartan Race journey, the American competition series Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge showcases an obstacle course that would prove difficult even for the most determined and disciplined athlete. Known as the hardest obstacle course challenge on the planet, the race faces off teams composed of two men, two women, and an elite Spartan athlete in a one-mile run designed to test everything they are made of.

The Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge airs every Saturday on RTL CBS Extreme, 9:35PM. Follow us at www.facebook.com/RTLCBSExtreme as well as at @rtlcbsextreme on Twitter and Instagram for more updates.

This is Sparta!!!  It's one of my favorite movie lines and the vividness of the scene when this was uttered is still fresh in my mind.. Throughout history, Spartan Army has a reputation as one of the best warriors and fighters in the history of the world. They were considered to be the greatest warriors of all time. With this reputation, they were the most feared military forces during the 6th – 4th century B.C. and  as a military powerhouse, Sparta's soldiers’ skills in warfare were unmatchable.

To achieve their prestigious title which is celebrated until today, these warriors had to go through the roughest training one could imagine. During the reign of the Spartan warriors, every boy born was screened by their elders to know if he could be a member of the elite army. These babies were examined physically, any baby considered weak was left to die. Those infants who passed the inspection were raised in tough love, ignored when they cried, raised not to fear the dark, and were bathed in wine instead of water.

As early as seven years old, the young boys were brought to “Agoge”, a military boarding school funded by the government in which they trained until they were 20. In school, they were conditioned for battle and survival. These young boys were brutally trained to be tough and be physically, mentally, and spiritually ready for battle. At a young age, they had to find ways for shelter as they slept outdoors all year round; to hunt or steal food, but when they were caught stealing they were punished by flogging.

The soldier life was the only option for these men to be considered citizens of Sparta, they served the army full-time until they reached 30, and only then were they allowed to marry. Spartan soldiers stayed on active duty until the age of 60.

In the modern times, the Spartan glory is celebrated thru movies, documentaries, and TV shows. Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge is one of the TV shows loyal to the Spartan concept, it showcases the strenuous training the ancient warriors went through. The show is a race designed to test one’s strength, endurance, and willpower, and every move can make or break them. The race proves to be one of the world’s most gruelling obstacle course ever developed.

While the Spartan’s way of training no longer applies in our time, there are qualities which were adapted by those who like to push themselves to the limit. The elite army didn’t earn their title overnight, they worked hard, day and night, rain or shine, and giving up was never an option. The harsh training made the spirit of the soldiers resilient, which is also one of the greatest quality an athlete needs to overcome the Spartan Race. While there was no need to sleep outdoors, or hunt for food, the discipline, hard work, patience, and focus greatly manifest in the heart of these athletes.

Slated to premiere on RTL CBS Extreme on 22 April 2017, 9:35PM (8:35 JKT/BKK), Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge will show how far tedious training, and strong determination can take an individual. A team composed of two men, two women, and one Spartan Elite athlete compete against five other well trained teams, in a one mile loop with obstacles they’ve never seen before, for a chance to win $250,000.

Follow the journey of these strong-willed individuals and see whose team will make it to be the ultimate race warriors. Follow us at www.facebook.com/RTLCBSExtreme and at @rtlcbsextreme on Twitter and Instagram for more updates.

Through mud, sweat, and pain—anyone who has participated in a Spartan Race can attest to the strength, skill, and willpower needed to outmatch the obstacle race. But for Filipina Spartans Meladee Igamen and Wheng Dichoso, the challenges they were made to face proved worth all the beating as their inner warrior was unleashed.

Meladee Igamen moved to Singapore to pursue a career in an IT firm. Her first year of living away from family didn’t come without difficulties, and life in an unfamiliar city meant that she had to become strong to look after herself.

In early 2015, she saw on television that an actor had participated in a Spartan Race. Finding out online that the race would be coming to Singapore, she signed up for an outdoor boot camp—a high-intensity fitness program designed to hone strength, balance, flexibility, mobility, agility, stamina, and teamwork through group workouts.

It was this training experience with the Lion City Spartans that helped build not only her physical capabilities, but also her courage and determination to take on the coming challenge. “Since then I became a part of the community and started training with them,” Igamen said. “I felt I was never alone and that I’m part of the family.”

Igamen competed in Singapore’s inaugural Spartan Race, the 2015 Singapore Spartan SPRINT, which consisted of tough obstacles including wall climbs, sandbag carries, and rope pulls. For her first Spartan event, Igamen finished fourth among female participants under the team category. She would run once again in succeeding Spartan Races the following year in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and Indonesia.

Wheng Dichoso, like Igamen, moved to Singapore to work in a multinational company. She is an active member of badminton and volleyball teams, as well as a photography group that shoots almost all running events in Singapore. For her, living an active lifestyle isn’t exactly new.

Dichoso learned about the inaugural Spartan Race in 2015 from ads in Singapore. She then signed up thinking that the event looked fun. The race would surely put her athletic skill to the test, but she still took Spartan Workouts at her gym to ready herself.

After her first Spartan experience, she decided to attend a mass workout program conducted by Spartan Race CEO Joe De Sena. There, she became acquainted with the Lion City Spartans, and realized that she would need more intense training to progress in the race.

“They were very loud and encouraged one another,” Dichoso said. “I decided to look for them on Facebook and immediately joined the group.”

She joined her first boot camp in February 2016 and made friends with fellow “fitness freaks” whom she enjoyed training and racing with. Together with her new group, Dichoso became better prepared to compete in Spartan events held in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, earning her a 2x Trifecta medal.

Meladee Igamen and Wheng Dichoso have proven themselves capable of surmounting even the most arduous tasks, but the two Filipinas also tell us a very important lesson: It’s only through great perseverance that people can discover their truest potential.

Similar to the experiences of these women, the American competition series Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge will showcase an obstacle course only hardened athletes can dare to overcome.
Composed of two men, two women, and an elite Spartan athlete, different teams compete against each other in one of the world’s most gruelling sporting events—a brutal one-mile race designed to test the very limits of the human mettle.

Catch the premiere of Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge on April 22, Saturday, 9:35PM, first and

exclusive on RTL CBS Extreme.
