During the Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) launch of the Imake.WeMake competition in 2016, many young Filipinos showcased their creativity and skills in developing inventions that can help address some of the country's societal problems. The competition proved effective in encouraging young Filipinos across the country to use their aptitude in science and technology in devising creative solutions in food safety, health, education, and security and disaster mitigation.

(left-right) Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Science Education Institute (SEI) Deputy Director, Engr. Albert Marino; SEI Director, Dr. Josette Biyo; Acer Philippines Managing Director Manuel Wong and Sales and Marketing Director Sue Ong-Lim seal DOST's partnership with the local ICT giant, Acer Philippines, to host the derby's sophomore run using its Internet-of-Things toolkit, Acer Cloud Professor.

This year, DOST partnered with local ICT giant, Acer Philippines, to host the derby's sophomore run using its Internet-of-Things toolkit, Acer CloudProfessor.

“Equipped with the CloudProfessor, young Filipinos can now easily apply programming in their innovative solutions. Coding can be a challenge for young innovators that all it takes is one wrong character for your code not to run. Acer CloudProfessor helps students with the wide selection of built-in codes that can easily be adapted in their creation,” said Acer Philippines Managing Director Manuel Wong.

The Acer CloudProfessor toolkit combines hardware, software, and the Cloud to make coding easy to learn and apply for students ready to bring their inventions to life. Using any mobile device, users can easily start coding by JavaScript, LiveCode, or Google’s Blockly anywhere even without a desktop through the CloudProfessor app. The straightforward interface and the toolkit’s user friendliness adds to the ease of use making coding simple to understand and effortless to execute. Each pack contains the CloudProfessor unit with eight application packages for the students to try out with the provided sample code, so they can experiment with hardware and mix and match the applications based on their preference.

“We devised CloudProfessor to be the tool that can make coding easy and fun,” said Wong. “Eventually, this will enable more and more Filipino students to become adept in coding, which is a necessary skill to thrive and excel in a tech savvy work environment.”

DOST Science Education Institute Director Dr. Josette Biyo said DOST and Acer Philippines are looking forward to new the ideas that Filipino students will come up with this year given the impressive array of inventions presented last year. “With encouragement and support, we’ve seen how students can provide fresh insights in coming up with ingenious solutions to decade-old challenges.”

In last year’s competition, student participants from high schools in Makati, Bataan, and Leyte emerged as the top teams, having developed a power generator to reduce energy consumption in school, a traffic surveillance system to detect vehicles' distance from pedestrian lanes, and water level sensors to detect rising flood waters.

A team from Pitogo High School- Makati, developed “Project IRIS” or an Intercepting Relayed Imaging System which is an automatic surveillance system that can detect cars that step inside the pedestrian lane. Bataan’s representatives from Limay National High School developed “Project Maxima: Hydropower Generator”, which can provide their school with an extra clean source of energy.

High School students showed their eagerness to showcase their skills and talents in the upcoming DOST IMake.WeMake contest. Following 2016's successful display of innovative inventions, the level of competition is expected to rise with Acer's easy-to-use coding and robotics toolkit, the CloudProfessor.

Lastly, inspired by learnings from super-typhoon Yolanda, Philippine Science High School-Eastern Visayas Campus made a Water Rise Alert System equipped with a water level sensor, a radio frequency transmission unit, alarms, a raindrop detector, lights for danger signaling, and solar panels for recharging.

“With last year’s remarkable entries, the bar is definitely set higher now with the inclusion of Acer’s CloudProfessor. Since coding will be supported by the all-in-one toolkit, we are expecting more impactful inventions to grab our attention.” Biyo added.

Teams of 3 students can submit their prototype proposals of inventions or solutions in food safety, education, health, security and disaster mitigation using the CloudProfessor as the main platform. Qualifying teams will be given technical training and workshop on CloudProfessor to help in developing their prototypes. After training, the teams will present their final output and three of the most outstanding works will receive prizes and awards.

Imake.WeMake was initiated to unleash the creativity of young Filipinos and to discover their potentials in using technology. This year, DOST’s partnership with the tech giant Acer Philippines further empowers the students to take their education beyond the walls of their classrooms and participate in a competition that can produce advanced tools to solve real-life challenges.

The world of learning has been transformed by technology. In this age, technology has become a natural tool for learning that many in this generation has the privilege of using. While traditional methods equip students with the knowledge they need, the use of technology enables students to apply what they’ve learned in a real-world setting. The bigger concern is in the part of the educator, whom we must admit are less tech-savvy than their students, with most of them coming from another generation. How can they maximize the potential of technology in the classroom?

This is the very challenge that Acer strives to overcome for education in the Philippines. Over 100 schools and universities have partnered with one of the top ICT companies in the world through Acer Academy. The program provides educational institutions around the country access to quality hardware, software and services that can improve the learning system of future professionals.

“Aside from accessing our products and services, our partner schools can also maximize our expertise and knowledge about the industry. As a leader in IT, we believe it is important to help bridge the gap of using technology in teaching by training educators how to maximize available tools that capture students’ interests,” said Managing Director of Acer Philippines, Manuel Wong.

Acer Academy provides innovative delivery of education by digitizing teaching tools such as online syllabi, web-based worksheets and modules and electronically programmed learning activities. With the help of these tools, educators adapt effective teaching methods. At the same time, students are provided the opportunity to learn skills that can be relevant to their future professions.

This complements the Department of Education’s (DepEd) drive for the use of technology in improving the country’s education system. The DepEd’s ICT roadmap aims to transform the education landscape in the Philippines through technology, including the introduction of gamification or the use of gaming in giving instructions to students. More public schools can soon learn coding and robotics programs that are fundamental to students as they enter the information age. For this to happen, educators need to be adequately trained and well-adapted to the new learning environment that technology has created.

“For the Philippines to keep up with the demands of the global workforce and the changing times, it’s important for both private and public organizations to work together in providing access to technology to improve the country’s education system. With the innovations we can share, we are proud partners of the academe in future-proofing the next generation’s careers and it starts with Acer Academy,” said Wong in support for the developments in the education system.

Acer Philippines, a leading tech and innovations company, cemented its biggest collaboration so far with American luggage and travel bag manufacturer Samsonite in a launch event for its back-to-school promo that was held earlier at the Mega Fashion Hall in SM Megamall.

Acer Philippines’ back-to-school promo for this year is especially made for millennials. Seeing the world’s biggest generation’s constant thirst for adventure and new experiences, the tech giant uses travelling as a motivation to inspire the youth to do well, whether in school or in their professions. Aptly called “#CarryOn”, the Promo encourages the youth to power through the hurdles they encounter in pursuit of their dreams and goals. In short, giving in to their wanderlust.

“If there’s one thing we’ve learned about millennials, it’s that they are very passionate individuals who are unstoppable if they are truly motivated,” shares Sue Ong-Lim, Acer Philippines’ Sales and Marketing Director. “Travel is, without a doubt, one of their strongest motivations. This is why we’ve partnered with Samsonite, a household name when it comes to travelling, to help us propel this cause forward. Hand in hand, we are hopeful that we will be able to not only motivate our millennials, but also reward them for their hard work by fueling their wanderlust.”

Befitting a movement that advocates trying out different things and enjoying new experiences, Acer Philippines’ Back-to-School Promo was launched through a travel-inspired event, where guests filled out a passport by completing various activities.

The affair also saw the debut of the #CarryOn video, which shows what the back-to-school campaign is all about. Directed by Ms. Irene Villamor, known for her works in Camp Sawi and Meet Me In St. Gallen, the film depicts how the youth turn to travelling as a way to cope and re-energize in the face of the stresses of their daily lives. The full video may be seen in the Acer Facebook Page.

“Travel inspires a different form of education – it makes you learn about new environments, exposes you to different cultures, and gives you a clearer view of the world,” shares Ciely Buenviaje, Country Head of Samsonite Philippines. “Samsonite could not be happier to be partnering with Acer in promoting such a holistic growth for the millennial generation.”

The Acer Philippines #CarryOn Back-to-School Promo will run until June 30, 2018, during which every purchase of qualified Acer and Predator laptops, Acer projectors, and Acer desktop will come with free Samsonite luggage.

After more than six hours of gaming, Asia Pacific Predator League 2018, Predator Gaming’s brand new DOTA:2 league and the most anticipated eSports competition, announced the  winner of the Philippine Leg which holds its finale at the High Grounds Café. The team Quid Pro Quo took home the PHP 50,000.00 and will be flying to Indonesia to represent the Philippines in the finals.

The finals is a set on a theme to give off the Predator Gaming’s frost-forged vibe. Setting the mood for an intense competition, the High Grounds Café was adorned with black stone boulders, crystals, snow, and grass to create an ice dungeon. This set-up served as the backdrop for the Philippine finals, putting a dramatic end to the national leg.

After 6 hours of DOTA:2 action, Quid Pro Quo emerged as the victor of the Philippine finals, besting Alpha Gaming on the 3rd round. Prior to succeeding in the national finals, Quid Pro Quo had previously competed and won in the North Luzon leg of the competition.

Quid Pro Quo takes home PHP 50,000.00 from the PHP 220,000.00 Philippine eliminations prize pool; Alpha Gaming takes home PHP 30,000.00; and Vigggo.Net and NCGC.Davao take home PHP 10,000.00 each. Quid Pro Quo will be moving on to compete in the final round to be held in Indonesia. Vying for the $150,000.00 prize pool, Quid Pro Quo will be competing against the national winners of 6 other countries in Asia Pacific, namely Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Hong Kong, and Indonesia.

Predator Gaming established Predator League as a means to empower amateur gamers to showcase their skills and talent on a global scene. Endeavoring to discover and put the spotlight on both professional and non-professional gamers, Predator League aims to capture fresh talent from the Philippines and the Pan Asia Pacific region’s bustling amateur eSports scene, particularly for DOTA:2.

“The Philippine leg of Asia Pacific Predator League 2018 has come to a momentous end, and we could not be any happier with the level of skill and sportsmanship we have witnessed here in the Philippines,” shares Andrew Hou, President of Predator Gaming Pan Asia Pacific Region. “Still, we see potential for tremendous growth. We are excited to unearth what we know for sure are incredible gaming talents in the Philippines. More than that, we are hopeful that we will be able to recruit more people to summon their strength and to discover the wonderful world of Predator Gaming.”

In the Philippines, the Predator League 2018 eliminations saw the participation of 127 registered teams. All elimination legs were done in partnership with THENET.COM (TNC), the gaming company’s eSports partner. Predator League also supports the Philippine DotA pride, TNC Pro Team-DotA 2.

“The astounding reception we have enjoyed in this year’s competition has confirmed that the eSports scene in the country is booming,” shares Eric Redulfin, General Manager of TNC. “The gaming community can rest assured that TNC and Predator will continue to work towards elevating gaming in the Philippines.”
