Reinforcing its commitment to make a difference through programs that support Filipino children’s need for education, QSR giant McDonald’s Philippines through its charity of choice, Ronald McDonald House Charities, once again extends its support to schools for the annual Brigada Eskwela.

Led by the Department of Education (DepEd), Brigada Eskwela gathers volunteers from both the private and public sector every year to help prepare public elementary and secondary schools for the upcoming school year. Since 2015, McDonald’s and RMHC have been providing meals, cleaning materials, and Ronald McDonald Read-to-Learn kits to partner schools.

This year, the company distributed over 20,000 Burger McDo to educators and volunteers, while 1,000 Happy Meal toys and 20 sets of Read-To-Learn kits were provided to elementary schools. These kits are part of RMHC’s Read-To-Learn program, a program in partnership with DepEd, which provides reading materials to Grade 1 and Grade 2 learners in public schools as well as trains educators on teaching beginning reading.

Grounded by its core value of malasakit, employee-volunteers from McDonald's also took time from their daily routine to help prepare and distribute meals, and clean school premises, to ensure that both students and teachers alike, can hold classes in a safe and conducive learning environment.

Meanwhile, the company also allocated streamers, welcome banners, and safety signages to over 4,000 schools, in an effort to ensure that government-mandated COVID-19 protocols are still being followed as face-to-face classes resume.

“On behalf of our Chairman and Founder Dr. George Yang and President and CEO Kenneth Yang, congratulations to the Department of Education led by Vice President and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte on the launch of the 2022 Brigada Eskwela program. Makakaasa kayo na nandito ang McDonald’s at ang kaniyang charity of choice, Ronald McDonald House Charities, para makatulong sa inyong paghahanda para sa simula ng bagong school year,” said McDonald’s Philippines Managing Director Margot Torres during the Brigada Eskwela Kick Off.

With the generosity of Filipinos, the support of partners, and the efforts of volunteers, RMHC can achieve more. Anyone can help share feel-good moments to those in need by donating at rmhc.org.ph/donate.

Ayala Healthcare Holdings, Inc. (AC Health) in its 4th year anniversary this month launched Soar, a community family day for children diagnosed with cancer. The anniversary celebration was held last Saturday, July 13, 2019 at the Amoranto Sports Complex in Quezon City.

AC Health has partnered with Kythe Foundation, a non-government organization, which provides Child Life services and psychosocial support to children with chronic illnesses.

The celebration was made more meaningful with over 500 participants which include 60 cancer patients and their families as well as  volunteers from the Ayala group came together for an afternoon of kite flying, games, and entertainment performances.

AC Health President and CEO, Paolo Borromeo, said that the anniversary activity aims to encourage volunteerism across the Ayala group in support of AC Health’s vision of expanding access to healthcare.

“Cancer treatment is difficult for many Filipinos, and in this event, we want to take the time to celebrate family and community amidst such difficulties. It is also our way of connecting with patients and their families, so that we can make sure our cancer hospital is responsive to their needs.” Borromeo said.

Last month, AC Health announced its plan to build a 100-bed, comprehensive cancer hospital in Metro Manila, with the goal of providing high-quality cancer care services, at a more affordable price. Cancer is now the third leading cause of death in the Philippines.

Soar is also in line with Ayala Corporation’s 185th year celebration.

Times have changed. Mother Earth needs us and in our own ways we can help her as this is the moment when call for environmental preservation is at its highest. For Filipinos who want to contribute to this environmental call, there is a much easier way to do this by using their mobile. Amazing right? Every Filipinos who want to help can now conveniently use an innovative mobile phone app to help plant trees and increase the Philippines’ forest cover.

Leading mobile wallet, GCash, is introducing an exciting “green” feature on the app called GCash Forest, which lets subscribers plant virtual trees that will have real-life counterparts. By the end of 365 days, GCash Forest aims to plant 365 thousand trees with the help of GCash subscribers.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Forest Management Bureau (FMB), the Philippines is losing 47,000 hectares of forest cover every year. The FMB also reported the need to rehabilitate 1.2 million hectares of forest lands by 2022 to prevent landslides, ensure water availability, and preserve biodiversity.

“GCash Forest is about making it easier, more convenient, and even rewarding for everyone to take care of our environment for the benefit of future generations,” said Mynt CEO Anthony Thomas. “GCash is no longer just providing an excellent platform for accessible financial products and services but also  enabling Filipinos to be more active in responding to real-life issues, such as climate change mitigation through reforestation.”

GCash considers GCash Forest as a last mile initiative that fully recognizes  the emergence of an all-digital Filipino lifestyle.

To implement its tree-planting initiatives, GCash Forest partnered with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and The Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN). The DENR will provide land resources in Ipo Watershed, an essential component of the Angat-Umiray-Ipo watersheds system supplying 98 percent of Metro Manila’s water. WWF will be providing trees and manpower while BIOFIN will provide expertise on monitoring.

Thomas added that recent findings on the Philippines’ vulnerability to climate-related hazards call for greater collective action. Results of the Global Peace Index 2019 identified the Philippines as the most susceptible country to the adverse effects of climate change. By leveraging the GCash platform and scale, GCash Forest aims to rally a coalition of individuals, non-government organizations, and international organizations to meet its 2020 targets.

To plant trees through GCash Forest, GCash users need to collect “green energy” by frequently using the app. Users who get enough green energy can choose which species of trees they want to plant in a selected area at the Ipo watershed. Once the trees are physically planted, users get to receive a certificate of ownership with a serial number, fun facts and updates on the growth of their trees on their GCash apps.

“Many Filipinos, especially the younger ones, care about the environment but a lot of them don’t know how they can  actively take part in environmental protection. This is a barrier that GCash Forest addresses because they only  need to use their smartphones—an already integral part of their daily lives—to make a difference,” concluded Thomas.

The new feature is inspired by Alipay Ant Forest, a product operates by Ant Financial, an Alibaba affiliate and the parent company of the world’s leading payments and lifestyle platform, Alipay. Via the mobile platform, more than 500 million users have planted 100 million real trees and advanced a shared vision of sustainable and inclusive development.

“The GCash Forest shows digital technology holds a huge power to mobilize people in support of sustainable development and the fight against climate change. And this power goes beyond border and is at our fingertips through our mobile devices,” said Yan Meng, Ant Financial’s Global Head of International Partnerships. “We’re more than happy to open up our technology and expertise to current and potential partners to make the world a better place.”

Over 20,000 participants joined the Angels Walk for Autism last March 3, 2019.  The Autism Society Philippines (ASP), together with SM Cares, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, holds this annual activity at the Mall of Asia Arena. Since it began in 2007, the walk continues to advocate for acceptance, accommodation and appreciation of Filipinos with autism towards an Autism-OK Philippines.

This year’s Angels Walk for Autism celebrates our country’s legacy of strong leaders that have brought the autism advocacy forward -- for the last 30 years, across 97 chapters, with 13,000 members -- and have become the foundation on which the next generation of leaders will build the future.

Hans T. Sy was honored as the inaugural recipient of the ASP’s Leadership Award for Autism Inclusion and Welfare.  It is the society’s highest recognition, celebrating exemplary leadership that has significant and positive impact on advancing ASP’s vision of acceptance, accommodation and appreciation of persons with autism in an Autism-OK Philippines.

Beyond awareness, Mr. Sy’s leadership has inspired tangible, measurable action through the accomplishments of SM Cares.

“Although many are aware of autism, very few people actually understand what it means to live life on the autism spectrum. SM Cares and ASP come together as a community to remind everyone that autism awareness and acceptance should be part of their everyday lives. Awareness is a good thing, but acceptance is far more meaningful,” said Engr. Bien Mateo, SVP of SM Supermalls and Program Director of SM Cares Program on PWD’s.

Former President Fidel V. Ramos, who issued EO 711 of 1996, instituting the commemoration of the National Autism Consciousness Week, will be honored by ASP as the Father of the Philippine Autism Advocacy. “FVR’s leadership opened the doors for the government agencies and private institutions to begin the path towards genuine inclusion of persons on the autism spectrum,” shared Mona Magno-Veluz, ASP National President, “His administration’s disability inclusive policies have put the Philippines ahead of our ASEAN neighbors in advocating for persons with autism and other invisible disabilities.”

The pre-walk program was led by Ms. Dang Koe, ASP Chair Emeritus and the inaugural ASEAN Prize Laureate 2018.  The ASEAN Prize aims to recognise inspiring achievements and contributions that foster the ASEAN identity, promote the ASEAN spirit, and champion the ASEAN way.  ASP is among the active movers behind the ASEAN Autism Network and the ASEAN Mapping Project.

ASP awarded the Autism Works Partners of the Year honors to Dohtonbori Philippines, a Japanese casual dining pioneer and to Willis Towers Watson, a global leader in risk management and consultancy, for their unwavering commitment to creation of productive opportunities for jobseekers with autism.

The program includes the presentation of the annual ASP Autism Angel Achievement Awards to Samantha Pia Cabanero (for Advocacy), Eduardo Enrique Munarriz (for Athletics), and Carlo Gregorio Veluz (for Visual Arts). It will also incorporate the induction of the new ASP Board of Trustees, composed of parent advocates; and the first set of officers of the ASP Self-Advocates Circle, composed of adults with autism. The festivities will include acts from special guests and performers on the autism spectrum, and a special presentation on ASP’s milestones since its foundation in 1989.

The walk is held with the support of the MOA Arena, SM Mall of Asia, National Council of Disability Affairs, ASEAN Autism Network and the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability.

BPO company [24]7.ai has proven that there is room for Persons with Disability in the corporate world, prompting Unilab Foundation to recognize the company as one of its industry partners for inclusive employment through Project Inclusion. Ceremonies were held for the partners at the Bayanihan Center in Pasig City, with [24]7.ai Recruitment Director Me-Ann Batallones receiving the recognition on behalf of the company.

Project Inclusion encourages employers in the Philippines to broaden perspectives toward inclusive workplace environments by hiring Persons with Disability. The program believes that Persons with Disability have what it takes to contribute to every company’s growth, just like any other regular employee.

This year, [24]7.ai hired candidates who are Deaf and hard of hearing to become Customer Service Representatives of the company’s email support account. Internships were also offered for the Finance and Recruitment departments. The candidates were hired based on their capabilities, including English communication, customer service, and computer skills. These are the same criteria that the company employ upon all applicants.

“We continuously challenge ourselves to come up with disruptive innovations that could potentially help us reach our goals,” said Me-Ann Batallones. “We want to challenge the status quo and contribute in ending the stigma for Persons with Disability because we believe in their skills and also because we know how much they can contribute to society.”

Known globally for its intent-driven customer engagement solutions, the Philippines office opened these opportunities in partnership with Persons with Disability-related organizations like Unilab Foundation, De La Salle College of St. Benilde – School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies, and Hand and Heart. They took on the task of assisting the company in screening and preparing the new PWD employees, focusing on culture and communication, as well as computer training.

Established in the Philippines in 2006, [24]7.ai now has more than 5,000 employees in the Philippines, with presence in key areas including Ortigas, Makati, Bonifacio Global City, and Cebu.

The Discovery Leisure Company, Inc. (TDLCI) partners with Art Relief Mobile Kitchen (ARMK), a non-government organization whose mission is to feed the hungry through community kitchens. The collaboration provided food aid to the rescuers, evacuees and volunteers in Barangay Ucab, Itogon, Benguet, where Typhoon Ompong triggered a state of calamity.

(L-R) Art Relief Mobile Kitchen vice-president Al Benavente and co-founder Precious Leano with Discovery Suites Manila general manager Leeds Trompeta

Discovery Shores Boracay, Discovery Suites Manila and Discovery Primea, all part of the Preferred Hotels and Resorts family, including sister properties Club Paradise Palawan and Discovery Country Suites have donated food items ranging from rice, cooking oil, condiments, and other basic necessities which can make approximately 11,000 meals.

A substantial monetary donation from TDLCI and its sister company Discovery World Corporation (DWC) is also being used to mobilize food relief in Barangay Ucab, to support the families in this critical period of transition -- majority have lost their livelihood from the typhoon.

“We are devastated by the situation in Itogon, Benguet,” said TDLCI chief operating officer Jun Parreño. “To ease the adversity being faced by the Barangay Ucab community, we feel that providing emergency food relief is a meaningful and impactful way of reaching out. This is why we chose to partner with ARMK.”

Art Relief Mobile Kitchen has been preparing and serving nutritious emergency food aid since 2013 through their mobile kitchens which can be deployed at a moment’s notice. Alex Baluyut, founder of ARMK, said “Our volunteers are highly motivated and believe in our advocacy in feeding the hungry in times of distress, and we are honored to partner with an organization such as TDLCI who understands the value of serving satisfying meals to help our people in need.”
